2020 Emory Softball Recap

2020 Emory Softball Recap

Prior to seeing its season come to a halt in mid-March, the softball team had embarked upon one of the most ambitious schedules in school history, eventually closing out the year with a record of 7-5.

The Eagles were preparing themselves for the opportunity to defend their UAA title while gearing up for a possible berth in the post season by playing six games against five teams that were ranked among the top 15 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Poll. Among those match-ups were contests against No. 1 Texas Lutheran, No. 2 Christopher Newport and No. 4 East Texas Baptist.

Senior Sami Feller captured her second straight All-UAA award, hitting .351 with 13 hits in 37 plate appearances. Senior Sarah Katz was the lynchpin of the infield after her second base post, landing All-UAA acclaim after delivering a .371 mark (13-of-35) at the plate and scoring 13 runs, good for second on the team. Fellow senior Greta Wilker held down the duties in left field, making 12 starts at the position, and finished up hitting at a .390 clip, rapping out a team-leading 16 safeties in 41 visits to the batter’s box. The owner of a team-best 16 RBIS, she was a model of consistency, hitting safely in 11 games.

Emory had two other performers draw All-Association kudos, sophomores Krista Colussi and Megan Weisenberg.  Colussi wrapped up the year as the squad's leading hitter with an effort of .423, delivering 11 hits in 26 plate appearances.  She totaled seven RBIs and ranked second on the Eagles' score sheet in slugging percenntage (.654) and on-base percentage (.514). Weisenberg, a starter in right field in all 12 games, hit .364 (12-of-33) and knocked in 10 runs. She crossed the plate a team-leading 15 times and paced the club with three triples.

Sophomore Madison Schaefer tossed a team-high 41 innings of work in the circle, compiling a final won-lost mark of 3-4. Schaefer registered six complete games in as many starts and fanned a total of 30 batters while issuing just three walks.

Joining Feller, Katz and Wilkers as seniors was Jessy McLean, a 12-game starter at the hot corner.  She socked a pair of home runs and stood second on the team with 13 runs batted in.

And while the COVID-19 pandemic prematurely ended their years, Feller, Wilker and McLean plan on returning to the program, taking advantage of a NCAA ruling that gives spring athletes who saw their season cut short another year of eligibility.  At the time of this writing, Katz had not made a decision as to whether or not she would back playing in 2021.
