Emory Softball Takes Two From #10 Berry in Friday Doubleheader

The Emory University softball program closed out the regular season Friday afternoon, taking two from No. 10 ranked Berry College at Cooper Field in Atlanta, GA.

The Eagles ran their overall record to 9-2 with the twin bill sweep while the Vikings dropped to 25-10.

Game One – Emory 3, Berry 2

The Eagles scored twice in the home half of the first and never looked back as they took game one by a run. Greta Wilker went 1-for-2 with a walk and two RBI to lead the offense while Madison Schaefer went the distance in the circle to improve to 7-0, allowing two runs on seven hits, one walk and struck out four.

Wilker opened the scoring in the first with a two-run double that scored Page Nellis and Mattie Ryan. The Eagles later tacked on a run in the fourth as Tyler Miller brought home Nellis on a sac fly to right.

After scoring once in the fifth, the Vikings threatened in the seventh, bringing the tying run to the plate. Morgan Frye had a run scoring single to cut the lead to one with two outs. However, Schaefer was able to buckle down and retire Brooke Whittemore on a pop up to second to end the contest.

Game Two – Emory 4, Berry 1

Wilker had another strong showing at the plate, collecting three more RBI and in the circle, Natalie Swift earned her first win of the season with 5+ innings of work as the Eagles picked up the Friday sweep.

Swift carried a shutout into the sixth inning as she finished with a line of one run on four hits and four walks while striking out one to earn her first career victory. Following a win in game one, Schaefer came on in relief to record the final six outs, striking out three to tally her first save of the year.

Once again, Wilker began the scoring for the Eagles with a two-run double in the first frame, driving home Nellis and Sami Feller. In the fifth, Emory built its lead to four with RBI singles in the inning by Ryan and Wilker.

Berry got on the scoreboard in the sixth following back-to-back walks to start the innings. After allowing a run-scoring single to the second batter she faced, Schaefer sent down the final five hitters she faced including two via the strikeout to nail down the save.

Emory now awaits its postseason fate as the NCAA Championships bracket will be announced Monday, May 17th starting at 1:00 pm (EDT) on NCAA.com.
