Softball Splits Friday Doubleheader with Covenant

Softball Splits Friday Doubleheader with Covenant

In its doubleheader against the Covenant Scots on Friday afternoon at Cooper Field, the Emory University softball team split games to bring its overall record to 6-6.

The Eagles won their first game in resounding fashion, defeating the Scots 9-0, before dropping the second game of the doubleheader by a count of 10-0.

Emory returns to action this Sunday at home when it takes on the LaGrange Panthers in a doubleheader with the first pitch of game one set for 1:30 PM.

Game 1 - Emory 9, Covenant 0 (5 innings)

The Eagles bats were unstoppable in the opener with three different players recording a home run en route to the mercy rule win. Senior Mattie Ryan was phenomenal for the Eagles as she demonstrated her power with a home run and a double that resulted in four RBI and two runs. In addition to her performance at the plate, Ryan also registered a victory in the circle as she tossed her second straight complete game shutout and brought her season record to 5-1. Senior Megan Weisenberg had herself a birthday bash in game one, recording three RBI and crossing the plate three times herself to go along with a home run to cap off her day. In her first game of the season, Allie Moberg went 1-for-2 at the plate with her first hit of the year being a solo shot over the left field fence.

The Eagles got the scoring started off early, with Ryan bringing Weisenberg home off a double in her first plate appearance of the day in the top of the first inning. A quiet second was followed up by an explosive third inning in which the Eagles scored four runs, highlighted by a three-run homer to left by Ryan to bust the game wide open.

The Eagles would plate another four runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the game in run-rule territory. Weisenberg and Moberg each recorded their homers in the fourth and graduate student Natalie Costero brought home the last run of the game for the Eagles off of a sacrifice fly into center field. Ryan gave up just three hits the entire game, never allowing the Scots an opportunity to sneak back into the contest.

Game 2 - Covenant 10, Emory 0 (6 innings)

The Eagles struggled to keep the offensive momentum going in the second game of the doubleheader as the Scots made some truly remarkable plays in the field to keep Emory off the base paths.

Ryan, starting her second consecutive game, took the loss for the Eagles giving up three runs on three hits in 1.1 innings of work. The Eagles held the Scots scoreless in the third and fourth innings but were unable to take advantage as Covenant stretched its lead out late to end the game in six innings.

Sophomore Page Nellis reached base twice and junior Tyler Miller reached base on a single deep to center but the Eagles were unable to string any hits together to give their offense the boost it needed to get back into the game.
