Softball Takes Two from Webster to Push Win Streak to Four

The Emory University softball team swept the Webster University Gorloks in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Atlanta to bring its record to 10-6.

The Eagles dominated the first game, run-ruling the Gorloks 11-1 in five innings before pulling out a much tighter contest in the second game, 6-5, in extra innings.

The Eagles begin UAA play next weekend when they take on Carnegie Mellon in a four-game home series with the first game set to begin on Friday, March 25th at 3:00 PM at Cooper Field.

Game 1 - Emory 11, Webster 1 (5 Innings)

The Eagles cruised to a victory in game one thanks to strong play at the plate by Emory's batters. Senior Mattie Ryan lived up to her billing going 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and two RBI. Ryan also picked up the win in the circle, giving up just three hits and no runs to move her season record to 7-2. Sophomore Page Nellis was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI and a big-time double in the third inning. Graduate student Allie Moberg was 1-for-2 at the plate which she turned into two RBI and a run for the Eagles steady offense.

The Eagles had their offense going early as Moberg brought senior Megan Weisenberg home on a single up the middle to score the first of two runs in the bottom of the first. The second run of the inning was scored on a walk with the bases loaded which marked the first of four runs the Eagles would score in this manner. The Eagles scored another seven runs between the second and third innings to put the game in run-rule territory. Emory held the Gorloks scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when Webster managed to get their first and only run on the board ending the game in five innings.

Game 2 - Emory 6, Webster 5 (8 Innings)

In what was a completely different game from the first, the Eagles went back and forth with the Gorloks before finally emerging victorious in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Ryan continued her torrid pace going 3-for-4 at the plate and racking up two RBI all while earning her second win in the circle on the day. Ryan also had a season high three doubles which were all instrumental in powering Emory to the win. Weisenberg had a solid game posting two RBI of her own as well as a run. Sophomore Rachel Cocolis was one of two Eagles to record a triple which allowed her to bring home the game tying run and cross the plate for the game-winning run.

After giving up a run to start the game, the Eagles responded in the bottom of the first with three consecutive extra-base hits to bring themselves out to an early 2-1 lead. The Gorloks knotted the game up in the third inning before taking a one run lead in the top of the fifth. The Eagles would respond in their typical fashion with an RBI double from Ryan that scored sophomore Abby Sekoff. Another run from the Gorloks in the sixth saw the Eagles trailing by one with just three outs left in the seventh. Moberg hit the big time RBI single to bring home freshman Kayla Lang for the game tying run.

In the eighth inning, with a runner starting the inning on second base, the Gorloks scored one but the Eagles responded yet again. An RBI triple from Cocolis to bring home junior Tyler Miller would tie up the game at five runs apiece. Gorlok pitching struggled, walking the bases loaded before hitting Weisenberg with a pitch to score the game-winning run.
