Case Western Reserve Takes Two From Emory Softball

The Emory University softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader against Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, OH on Saturday.

The Eagles fell in the first game 11-2 in five innings and followed that up with a 9-1 defeat in the second game that lasted five innings to move their season record to 15-14 and 4-7 in conference play. CWRU has now won four straight to move to 16-8 overall and stands in first place of the UAA at 8-2.

Emory returns to the field for the final game of its series against the Spartans on Sunday at 11:00 AM.

Game 1 - Case Western Reserve 11, Emory 2

The Eagles were unable to slow a powerful Spartans offense, as Case Western Reserve had four balls they put over the outfield fence. Sophomore Rachel Cocolis was a bright spot for the Eagles, going 1-for-2 at the plate and with one run, one RBI and a double. Sophomore Natalie Swift accrued the other RBI for the Eagles which marked her sixth of the season. Swift also drew the start in the circle and with her performance her season record moved to 3-9.

The Spartans scored seven runs over the first two innings and despite the Eagles best efforts they were unable to work their way back into the game. Both of Emory's runs came in the fifth with the first run coming from a Cocolis double down the left field line that plated sophomore Page Nellis.

Game 2 - Case Western Reserve 9, Emory 1

A second consecutive four home run game for the Spartans proved too much to handle for the Eagles in the second game of the afternoon. Junior Tyler Miller was responsible for the Eagles one run with a double into right center in the second inning. Senior Megan Weisenberg scored off of Miller's RBI and had a solid 1-for-2 day at the plate. Senior Mattie Ryan was the starting pitcher for the Eagles, striking out three over her 4.1 innings of work.

A three-run first inning for the Spartans set the tone for the game eventually leading to the eight-run final margin. Emory brought the score within two in the second inning off of Miller's double but were unable to respond to the Spartans bats for the remainder of the day.
