Emory Women's Basketball Edged By Maryville

Emory Women's Basketball Edged By Maryville

Senior Ashley Oldshue came off the bench to lead three double-figure scorers with 12 points, but it wasn't enough as the Emory women's basketball dropped a tough Friday evening decision to Maryville College.  The Scots won their fourth straight game and raised their record to 5-6 following a 56-55 outcome over the Eagles who saw their won-lost ledger fall to 5-4.

In addition to Oldshue's effort, junior Azzairia Jackson-Sherrod and freshman Blair Ripley each contributed 10 points, with Ripley also grabbing a team-high seven rebounds and Jackson-Sherrod finishing with six boards.  Ripley converted five-of-eight field goal attempts en route to her second double-figure scoring performance of the season while Jackson-Sherrod was successful on five-of-11 from the floor in posting her seventh double-digit outing.

Down by five points with 7:17 left in the final quarter, buckets by Jackson-Sherrod and Ripley drew Emory to within one at 51-50 with 4:41 remaining.  After a pair of charity tosses by the Scots, another basket by Ripley kept Emory to within one point with 2:52 on the clock.  MC used a three-pointer by Madison Maples to claim a four-point edge, but Eagle freshman Lynn Johnson countered with a triple 28 seconds later, cutting Maryville's lead to 56-55 with 1:31 left.  The Scots misfired on their ensuing possession but the Eagles could not capitalize as they turned the ball over.  Another miss by the Scots allowed Emory to have the final shot of the game, but a good look from three-point range off a loose-ball scramble just missed its mark.

Playing its first game since Dec. 5, Emory closed out the game shooting 39.3 percent (24-61) from the floor while Maryville checked in at 37 percent (20-54).  The Scots were more effective from long range, converting 43.5 percent (10-23) from beyond the arc compared to the Eagles' 2-of-12. Emory did show a 39-34 edge in rebounding.

Emory returns to action on Saturday (Dec. 30) when it plays host to Berry College in a 6:00 pm tip.
