Emory Women's Basketball Opens UAA Play vs. No. 10 Rochester

GAME FACTS – The Emory women's basketball team begins the program's 30th campaign of University Athletic Association play on Saturday (Jan. 6) when it entertains the University of Rochester.  The Woodruff PE Center will be the site of the 58th meeting between the Eagles and Yellowjackets, and the game is scheduled for a 2:00 pm start.

THE COACHES – Interim Head Coach Misha Jackson (Emory, '13) was appointed to her current post in October of this year, following the resignation of Christy Thomaskutty.  Jackson had served as an assistant on the Eagles' staff since the 2013-14 season.  She played three seasons in an Eagle uniform (2010-11 through 2012-13), seeing action in a total of 78 games, 69 in a starting capacity. She closed out her career ranked among the program's top-10 all-time performers in 11 categories.

Jackson is assisted by Lauren Rothfeld and Chuck Melito.

Jim Scheible (Clarkson, '88) is in his 19th season at the helm of the Rochester program.  Heading into the Emory game, he has posted a school and career record of 354-151, which includes 11 trips to the NCAA D-III Tournament. Now in his 27th year as a head coach, Scheible has registered a career mark of 495-222.

2017-18 RECORDS – Emory sports an overall record of 6-5.  The Eagles finished off the non-conference portion of their schedule on Tuesday (Jan. 2) with a 75-60 setback at Oglethorpe University. Junior Azzairia Jackson-Sherrod and sophomore Erin Lindahl tallied 15 and 14 points, respectively, to pace the Eagles' scoring attack, with Jackson-Sherrod also leading Emory with nine rebounds.

Emory is 3-3 at the Woodruff PE Center and 3-2 in road contests.

Rochester, ranked No. 10 in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, has won five straight contests, boosting its record to 10-1.  In their most recent action, the Yellowjackets hosted RIT on Tuesday and came away with a 78-68 victory. UR shows a 4-1 ledger in road/neutral contests and is 6-0 at home.

SERIES RECORDS – In a series that began in January of 1989, Rochester holds an all-time record of 33-24 against Emory. The Yellowjackets captured the opening meeting of the 2016-17 campaign in Rochester, 84-75, before the Eagles claimed a 73-57 at the Woodruff PE Center in the regular-season finale.  Emory holds a 16-14 edge in games that have been played on its home floor.

EMORY TRIO TO SERVE AS CAPTAINS – Serving as captains of the 2017-18 Emory women's basketball team are junior Ashley Oldshue  (Glenview, IL), and sophomores Allison Chernow (Dresher, PA) and Erin Lindahl (Yardley, PA).

OLDSHUE TOPS EAGLES IN SCORING AND REBOUNDING – Ashley Oldshue came off the bench and notched a team-high 19 points in the Eagles' 78-65 victory over Berry College last Saturday (Dec. 30), the sixth time this year she paced the squad's scoring attack. She also grabbed a game high 15 boards against the Vikings, her second-highest career effort, which enabled to post her fourth career double-double of the year and eighth of her career.

Heading into the Rochester affair, Oldshue is scoring at a team-high 16.7 per-game clip, good for the No. 5 spot on the UAA list. She has converted a league-best 58.1 percent (61-105) of her field goal opportunities with that effort 14th among all D-III players (through Jan. 3).  She has sank 50 percent or better from the floor in seven of her nine appearances.  Emory's leading rebounder in five outings, her 8.6 per-game average is good for the No. 3 spot on the UAA ladder. Included in her rebounding totals is a 2.4 per-game average on the offensive glass, good for fifth place among conference players.

Career-wise, she has registered 34 double-figure scoring performances and had a 30-game streak of 10 or more points snapped in the Oglethorpe contest. She also holds down the school's No. 1 position in career field goal percentage (.538, 244-of-453).

JACKSON-SHERROD A KEY COG IN OFFENSE – Azzairia Jackson-Sherrod's team-high 15 points in the Oglethorpe game was her fifth straight and ninth contest this year with double figures.  Over her last five performances, she is averaging 13.4 points and shooting a keen 57.4 percent (31-54) from the field.

One of two players on the team to have drawn starting nods in all 11 games, she is third on the club and 13th on the UAA scoring chart (12.1 ppg).  Jackson-Sherrod has been one of the team's most efficient shooters, nailing 49.6 percent (62-127) of her field goal attempts, good for second place on the team and fourth in the conference. She has been successful on 50 percent or better from the floor in eight contests

TSE DIRECTING EMORY OFFENSIVE ATTACK – Sophomore Lindsey Tse has directed the Emory offensive attack from her point-guard position with a fair amount of precision, doling out 5.5 assists per game with that mark leading the University Athletic Association and placing 18th among all D-III players (through Jan. 3).

Tse has dished out seven or more assists in five contests and tied her career best with an 11-assists effort vs. Belhaven (Nov. 18) at the Emory Tip Off Tournament. In addition, her 2.18 assist/turnover ratio is second in the UAA and stands 31st nationally.  Her game-high tying five assists in the Oglethorpe game upped her career total to 169, good for a 17th-place tie on the Eagles' all-time list.

NUMBERS TO NOTE – The Eagles have outshot six opponents from the floor and hold a 5-1 record in those games … Emory reserves have outscored the opposition subs in nine games … Emory has won its last 22 games when scoring 80 or more points … Emory has won 44 of its last 60 and 60 of its last 79 home games … Sophomore Erin Lindahl has turned in eight performances of double-digit scoring and ranks second on the club and 12th in the UAA in scoring average (12.2 ppg) … Lindahl has been excellent from the charity stripe, converting 90.6 percent (29-32) of her foul shots with that mark tops in the UAA and 14th nationally (through Jan. 3) … Freshman Blair Ripley has grabbed five or more rebounds in each of her last eight games and her season average of 5.3 boards per game is fourth on the team and 17th in the UAA … Ripley has a team-high 24 offensive caroms and her 2.2 per-game mark on that end of the floor stands ninth among UAA players …  Freshman Lynn Johnson (Raleigh, NC) posted her first double-figure scoring game with a 12-point performance against Berry College that was highlighted by her knocking down a team-high three triples in eight attempts … The first quarter has been kind to the Eagles as they own a 17.5-14.7 scoring advantage in that frame … The Eagles have outscored the opposition in 23 quarters while being outpointed in 19 (two quarters have been tied) … Emory has outrebounded six opponents and holds a 38.5-38.0 per-game edge in that category … Both Emory and the opposition have scored 20 or more points in a quarter on 10 occasions … The Eagles have 12 or more offensive rebounds in eight contests.
