Emory Women's Basketball Falls To No. 21 Chicago

Emory Women's Basketball Falls To No. 21 Chicago

Sophomore Allison Chernow came off the bench to lead three double-figure scorers with 17 points, but it wasn't enough as the Emory women's basketball team dropped a Friday evening home decision to the University of Chicago.  The No. 21 Maroons captured their 13th straight victory and raised their overall record to 15-2 (6-0 University Athletic Association) following a 79-61 triumph over the Eagles who slipped to 10-7 overall (4-2 in the UAA).

The second half proved to be the deciding factor in the outcome as the Maroons posted a 39-22 scoring advantage, connecting on 59.3 percent (16-27) from the floor over the final two frames while Emory shot just 20 percent (6-30).  For the contest, UC sank an Emory-opponent season high 55.6 percent (30-54) of its field goal attempts, compared to Emory's 37.3 percent (22-59).  Both teams finished with 34 rebounds with junior Ashley Oldshue leading the team's effort in that category with six boards to go along with 11 points.  Sophomore Erin Lindahl posted a 13-point evening, going 5-of-10 from the field and two-of-four from the charity stripe.

A jumper by Lindahl gave the Eagles a 43-42 edge with 8:01 left in the third quarter but a 9-0 Maroon run, which saw Taylor Lake score the final four points of the blitz, put the visitors ahead by a 51-43 count with 5:57 remaining.   A bucket by sophomore Lindsey Tse kept Emory within striking distance, down seven points with 4:29 left, but UC accounted for the stanza's final eight points, with Olariche Obi scoring four points, to claim a 62-47 margin heading into the final 10 minutes.

A pair of charity tosses by Chernow drew Emory to within 13 points early in the final quarter, but six straight points by the Maroons extended their advantage to 68-49 with 8:45 remaining.  From there, the closest the Eagles would get was 17 points.  Obi topped the UC scoring effort with 22 points while Lake chipped in 17 points.

Both teams shot the ball well over the first two quarters with Chicago taking a slim 40-39 edge into halftime.  The Eagles connected on 55.2 percent (16-29) of its floor attempts compared to the Maroons' 51.9 percent (14-27).  Oldshue and Chernow each registered 11 first-half points, with Oldshue sinking four-of-five from the field, including three-of-four from the stripe, while Chernow knocked down four field goals in five tries including a pair of triples.  Chicago built a pair of eight-point leads in the second quarter before a 10-4 spurt by the Eagles,  which saw Lindahl score five points, drew them to within two points with 3:27 remaining.  After a UC charity toss with 27 ticks on the clock pushed the visitors to a four-point advantage, a three-pointer by Chernow with five seconds on the clock closed out the scoring for the half.

Emory returns to action on Sunday (Jan. 28) when it hosts Washington University in a scheduled 2:00 pm start.
