Junior Lindsey Tse led five double-figure scorers with a season-high 15 points and the Emory women's basketball closed out a successful road weekend on Sunday with a victory over New York University. The Eagles captured their fifth straight win and raised their overall record to 15-5, 6-3 in the University Athletic Association, following a 78-70 triumph over the Violets who slipped to 11-8 overall, 3-6 in the league.
Tse hit six-of-10 field goal attempts and three free throws in coming through with her third double-figure scoring outing of the year. Tse also dished out a game-high eight assists, her 15th effort of five or more this season. Junior Allison Chernow was second on the team's score sheet with 13 points while classmate Erin Lindahl added a dozen points. Senior Ashley Oldshue and sophomore Blair Ripley rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points apiece.
Emory never trailed in the contest, and used a strong first quarter that saw hit connect on nine field goals in 16 attempts in claiming a 22-11 edge after the opening 10 minutes of action. The Eagles used a 10-2 run, with Ripley scoring four points and Tse three during that spurt, over the final 3:55 of the quarter to take the double-figure lead. After the teams traded buckets to start the second stanza, Emory saw six different players hit baskets (going 6-for-6 from the floor in the process) during a 12-2 blitz that pushed its lead to 36-15 with 5:07 left in the frame. However, the well went dry for the Eagles from that stage as they were held scoreless for the request of the quarter, misfiring on their last seven field goal attempts and turning the ball over on three occasions, while NYU ran off 13 unanswered points to draw to within a 36-28 count heading into halftime. The Eagles did end the opening 20 minutes shooting a keen 53.3 percent (16-of-30) from the floor, and were paced in scoring by Tse's seven points.
A Chernow triple to open the third stanza gave Emory a double-figure lead that it would not relinquish for the rest of the quarter. Ahead by a 10-point margin, buckets by sophomore Molly Weiss, senior Azzairia Jackson-Sherrod and Oldshue, accounted for a 6-0 spurt, extending its lead to 16 points with 4:37 left. After a NYU basket, the Eagles recorded seven of the game's next nine points, highlighted by a Lindahl trey, to balloon its cushion to 19 points, 54-35, with 2:05 remaining. However, the Violets stayed in the hunt as a result of an 8-0 charge to close out the quarter, narrowing its deficit to 11 points. NYU drew to within eight after hitting a trey to start out the final quarter, but back-to-back baskets by Ripley and Tse boosted the Eagles to a 14-point advantage, 64-50, with 5:43 left on the clock. NYU crept back to within nine points, but a three-pointer by Lindahl and pair of charity tosses by Tse kept the Eagles comfortably ahead, 73-59, with 2:44 left.
Emory closed out the game shooting 51.9 percent (28-of-54) from the field, including 50 percent (5-of-10) from beyond the arc. NYU recorded a 38.6 percent (27-of-70) from the floor and was successful on 31.6 percent (6-of-19) from distance. The Violets posted a 39-37 edge in rebounding with Lindahl and Ripley sharing for team honors with seven boards each.
Emory returns to action next Friday (Feb. 8) when it hosts Washington University in a 6:00 pm tip.
