2019-20 Emory Women's Basketball Schedule
The Emory women's basketball team has released its 2019-20 schedule. The Eagles will embark upon a 25-game slate with 12 contests slated on their home floor at the Woodruff PE Center.
Emory will face six teams that competed in last year's NCAA D-III Tournament, four non-conference opponents and two from the University Athletic Association. The Eagles closed out the 2018-19 season with an overall mark of 19-7, including a 10-4 showing in University Athletic Association play that was good for a second-place tie. Emory was one of three conference programs to earn a spot in the postseason.
Six different conferences are represented among the 11 non-conference dates that await Emory. Head Coach Misha Jackson and her squad open the campaign Nov. 13 when they venture to Demorest, Ga., to square off against South Region foe Piedmont College. The Lions are coming off a fine campaign that saw them compete in the postseason while finishing the year with a mark of 23-6. The Eagles make their home debut the weekend of Nov. 16-17 when they host the Emory Holiday Inn Tip Off Classic. The Cru of Mary Hardin-Baylor, a member of the American Southwest Conference (ASC), will be Emory's opening-round foe while the University of Lynchburg from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) will be the opposition the following day. UMHB made its way to the Round of 16 of last year's NCAA Tournament, finishing the season with a ledger of 27-4. Lynchburg closed out last year with a 13-13 record, 11-7 in conference action. Also competing in the Classic will be Colorado College with Head Coach Katherine Menendez a former assistant at Emory from 2010-11 through 2013-14. Following the Classic, the Eagles face a four-game road swing, starting with a formidable West Coast trip that will see them battle Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Nov. 22) and Pomona-Pizter (Nov. 23). CMS was the regular-season champion of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference last year, registering a won-lost mark of 24-3, while Pomona-Pitzer played its way into the D-III national tourney en route to a final mark of 22-6. Emory concludes the road trek with a pair of South Region dates -Sewanee on Nov. 26 and Oglethorpe on Dec. 3. Emory and the Tigers of Sewanee will be playing for the 47th time while the meeting with the Stormy Petrels, a NCAA participant from last season and owners a 23-7 record, will mark the 42nd-ever meeting between the two programs. The rest of December will see Emory take to the court three more times, December 7 at home against Huntingdon College, Dec. 10 at crosstown foe Agnes Scott and Dec. 30 with a home outing vs. Berry College.
The 2020 portion of the schedule opens on Jan. 2 with Emory playing its final non-conference game of the year when it hosts Bates College from the New England Small College Conference (NESCAC) in a 3:00 pm start.
The 14-game University Athletic Association docket begins with a Jan. 11 home affair against the University of Rochester. The following weekend will see the Eagles venture to New York University (Jan. 17) and Brandeis (Jan. 19). After returning to the Woodruff PE Center for encounters against Carnegie Mellon (Jan. 24) and Case Western Reserve (Jan. 26), Emory gears up for back-to-back weekends against the other two UAA teams to earn NCAA Tournament spots, at Chicago on Jan. 31 and Washington University, who got as far as the Round of Eight, on Feb. 2. The Maroons and Bears turn around and head to Atlanta for Feb. 7 & 9 games, respectively, before the Eagles wrap up their regular-season home schedule when NYU (Feb. 14) and Brandeis (Feb. 16) come to town. Emory will play its final three league contests on enemy courts, beginning with a Feb. 21 meeting at Carnegie Mellon followed by a Feb. 23 clash at Case Western. The Eagles and Rochester will bring down the curtain on their respective UAA schedules on Feb. 29.
"Our non-conference schedule has a combination of familiar and new opponents that will be a great test for us," Jackson stated. "The competition we will face provides us with the opportunity to go up against styles of play we haven't faced in the past. A number of these programs have a great history of success, and I think are important to play in order to be a national tournament contender.
"We are thrilled to be travelling to the West Coast for the first time," Jackson added. "On top of being able to play two teams are coming off outstanding years, we get an opportunity to take a few players home. The schedule of non-league contests will be great preparation for the UAA, with the league promising once again to be one of the best in Division III."
Emory will play five opponents for the first time in program history: Mary Hardin-Baylor (Nov. 16), Lynchburg (Nov. 17), Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Nov. 22), Pomona-Pitzer (Nov. 23) and Bates (Jan. 2).
