Women's Basketball Travels to NYU & Brandeis in First UAA Road Weekend

The Emory University women's basketball team faces two of its tougher tests this weekend as the Eagles are set to take on NYU and Brandeis in the first road trip of the University Athletic Association slate.

Emory Eagles (10-2, 1-0 UAA)

Led by seven players with eight points or more, the Eagles picked up their fifth win in a row on Jan. 11, edging Rochester 86-65 in the conference opener. Senior Allison Chernow poured in a season-high 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting and tied a team-high with six rebounds as she collected UAA Co-Athlete of the Week honors for the first time this season. Classmate Erin Lindahl fashioned 14 points with sophomore Anna Arato and junior Molly Weiss totaling 11 points each to round out the double figure scorers in the win.

Entering the weekend, the Eagles find themselves receiving votes in both the D3hoops.com and WBCA national polls and are among the best in Division III in scoring defense (18th, 51.8 PPG), FG percentage (18th, 44.5%), three-point field goal percentage (27th, 35.3%) and assist-to-turnover ratio (24th, 1.07).

Head Coach Misha Jackson has compiled an overall record of 42-21 during her three seasons at the helm and is joined on staff by Sammi Goldsmith and Chuck Melito.

Lindahl, one of four Eagles averaging double figures in scoring, moved into 13th place all-time with 903 points and is 20 away from 12th place and is tied for seventh on the career ladder with 108 made three-pointers…Chernow is sixth on the program's three-pointers totem pole with 111 made from distance…Senior Lindsey Tse leads the Eagles with 38 assists this season after tying her season-high output with six against Rochester, which places her second all-time in school history with 445 dimes, trailing only Savannah Morgan's career total of 526…With her six assists and one turnover performance, Tse took over the Division III lead in assist-to-turnover ratio at 4.22…Junior Blair Ripley is 88th in the country with 22 blocked shots and is just four rejections away from tying Whitney Martin for fourth on the school's all-time list with 87.

NYU Violets (11-1, 1-0 UAA)

The Violets, 11-1 and owners of a seven-game winning streak, feature one of the highest scoring offenses in the country, entering Friday third in Division III at 84.3 points per game. In addition, NYU sits 12th nationally in field goal percentage (44.8%), seventh in three points made per contest (10.3) and first in both assists per game (20.1) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.44). The Violets are tied for 22nd in this week's WBCA top-25 poll and are receiving votes from D3hoops.com national poll voters.

Junior Janaen Cuffee headlines the high-scoring NYU offense with 22.8 points per game, the sixth-best mark in DIII, and is one of four Violets averaging 10 points or more. Freshman Brooklyn Shelton has burst onto the scene with 16.0 PPG through her first 12 games and currently leads the country in free throw percentage (97.4%) and is 28th in FG percentage (54.8%). Senior Annie Barrett has been the lead distributor for Violets so far and ranks third among Division III qualifiers with a 6.8 assists per game average.

NYU is patrolled on the sidelines by Head Coach Meg Barber who has produced an overall record of 28-11 in her two seasons. She is joined on the bench by Nettie Respondek, Audrey Cunningham, Taysha Pye and Emiko Smith.

Brandeis Judges (10-2, 0-1 UAA)

The Judges saw their seven-game win streak snapped the last time out against the Violets (76-65), giving them just their second loss of the season and first since a defeat to now No.-1 ranked Tufts on November 23. Brandeis is 27th in the county at 76.1 PPG prior to the weekend and boasts the sixth-best three-point percentage in DIII at 38.0%. The Judges are receiving votes in this week's D3hoops.com national poll.

Junior Camila Casanueva and senior Hannah Nicholson highlight the Judges so far in the 2019-20 season as the duo sit at 15.0 and 12.8 PPG before play on Friday. The tandem also is situated among the nation's best with Nicholson sitting 30th in FG percentage (54.5%) and 99th in rebounding (9.4) with Casanueva third in FT percentage (94.4%) and 35th in three point percentage (43.3%).

Brandeis is under the leadership of tong-time Head Coach Carol Simon who is in the midst of her 33rd season with the team. Simon is joined on staff by Scott Foulis, Aseem Rastogi and Chelsea Houlihan.

Series Records

NYU holds a 42-19 overall record in the all-time series however it has been the Eagles controlling the series in recent years with Emory winning five of the last seven meetings including a sweep of the season series last year.

The Eagles control the advantage against the Judges all-time, leading the series 34-27. Emory has won four straight in the series and six of the last seven.
