Women's Basketball Holds On for Senior Day Win Over Brandeis

The Emory University women's basketball team survived a late-game push from Brandeis University, squeaking out the 58-57 victory Sunday afternoon on Senior Day. Prior to tip-off, the Eagles honored their six seniors of Lindsey Tse, Allison Chernow, Erin Lindahl, Benna Ames, Hazel Carmona and Safiya Dzotsi with a special on-court ceremony

The Eagles picked up the season sweep of the Judges to improve to 16-6 overall and 7-4 in the UAA while Brandeis fell to 13-9 on the season and 3-8 in the Association. With three games to go in the season, Emory maintained its second place position in the conference, sitting one game back of Chicago and NYU (8-3).

Holding a 54-43 lead with 7:47 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Judges used a 12-2 run over the next six minutes of game play to cut the Emory lead to 56-55 with 1:40 to go in the game. After a pair of free throws by junior Blair Ripley with 57 seconds left, the Judges cut it to one point again on a Courtney Thurn layup with 34 ticks on the clock. After a missed three by sophomore Anna Arato, Brandeis had possession for one final shot but the last ditch attempt by Francesca Marchese at the buzzer came up short as Emory prevailed.

Ripley had another dominating effort, recording her second straight double-double as she scored a career-best 23 points in a season-high 31 minutes off the bench. Ripley secured 10 rebounds to go along with her career-high output in points while blocking three shots. In her last seven games, Ripley has blocked 23 shots and at least two rejections in all seven contests.

Arato finished with nine points, all coming in the first half, as the Emory built a 34-28 halftime advantage. The lead swelled to as many as 12 mid-way through the third quarter. Chernow paced all seniors with seven points in 11 minutes of action. Sophomore Tori Huggins collected a game-high 12 rebounds, her eighth game this season with at least 10 or more boards.

The Eagles begin a three-game road swing to close out the regular season next week with matchups against Carnegie Mellon and Case Western Reserve.
