Emory Women's Basketball Routs Birmingham-Southern to Close Out Richard Dardene Classic

The Emory University women's basketball team closed out the Richard Dardene Memorial Classic with an emphatic 84-51 victory over Birmingham-Southern Sunday afternoon in Birmingham, AL. The Eagles went undefeated in the Classic and brought their season record to 2-1.

Senior Anna Arato and junior Claire Brock tied as the scoring leaders for the Eagles, each netting 14 points. Senior Tori Huggins poured in her first double-double of the season going for 10 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Mariane Auza continued to prove that she's a defensive menace generating two blocks and a steal to go along with eight points and seven rebounds.

For the Panthers, Brooke Westhoelter came off the bench and led the team in both scoring (16) and rebounds (5). Of the starters, Josie Wannemuehler was the most impactful as she netted 13 points including shooting 50% from beyond the arc.

The Eagles greatly out-shot the Panthers in FG% (45.8% - 31%), 3PT% (33.3% - 17.4%) and FT% (69.6% - 52.4%). Emory's size and overall brute force proved too much for Southern as they outrebounded them 59-27 and outscored them in the paint 56-26. On top of everything else, the Eagles proved to be too much for the Panthers in transition as Emory had 20 fast break points to BSC's eight.

A back and forth start to the first quarter eventually saw the Eagles close on a 14-2 run to give the Eagles a 24-12 lead at the end of the first that they would not relinquish for the rest of the game. The Panthers played Emory almost even in the second and third quarters but couldn't withstand a furious run from the visitors in the fourth. The Eagles outscored the Panthers 24-6 in the final quarter to put an exclamation point on the game.

The Eagles return home next weekend, November 19-21, as they host the Emory Tip-Off Classic and face-off against No. 2 ranked East Texas Baptist and Ferrum.
