Women's Basketball Races Past Oglethorpe, 84-38

The Emory University women's basketball cruised to an 84-38 victory over the Stormy Petrels of Oglethorpe University Wednesday evening at the Woodruff PE Center.

Junior Claire Brock had what will go down as the best game of her career to this point, pouring in 24 points on 5-9 shooting behind the arc and went on her own personal 8-0 run to close the second quarter. Senior Tori Huggins had an outstanding game of her own contributing 21 points on 8-11 shooting as well as a team-high seven rebounds. On the defensive side of the ball, junior Mariane Auza was up to her usual wizardry producing five steals which brings her season average up to an impressive 2.2 steals per game. For Oglethorpe, guard Carley Bell led the team in scoring with eight points in large part due to her perfect day from the charity stripe where she shot 6-for-6.

The Eagles shot a blistering 38.2% from three marking a season-high for the team and as a result hit a season-high 13 triples. On top of the impressive scoring display, the Eagles put on a passing clinic, out-assisting the Stormy Petrels 19-5. Where Emory continues to generate the most success is on the defensive end of the ball where they forced Oglethorpe into 26 turnovers while the Eagles kept their turnovers to a lowly 12 for the game.

A close first quarter saw the Eagles with a small five point lead but an explosive showing from behind the arc in the second quarter gave Emory all they needed to put away the Stormy Petrels. Emory shot 7-9 from beyond the arc in the period and held Oglethorpe to 26.3% shooting from the floor in the quarter to give the Eagles a 42-22 lead going into halftime. Another defensive masterclass in the third quarter would see the Stormy Petrels score only six points on 6.7% shooting from the floor while the Eagles put up another 29 points on 61.1% shooting. Emory would go on to close out Oglethorpe in the fourth holding them to just ten more points the rest of the game resulting in the eventual 84-38 victory for the Eagles.

Emory takes the court again on Saturday, December 4th when they face off against No. 23 ranked Rhodes at the Woodruff PE Center in Atlanta, GA.
