Women's Basketball Wins Fourth in a Row; Downs Carnegie Mellon 73-60

The Emory University women's basketball team used a fourth quarter surge to defeat Carnegie Mellon University, 73-60, Sunday afternoon in Pittsburgh, PA.

Senior Anna Arato led the Eagles in scoring with 17 points to go along with six rebounds and two assists. Junior Claire Brock scored 16 points of her own with 10 of them coming in the fourth quarter as the Eagles made their late game push to close out the game. Junior Mariane Auza was doing all the dirty work for Emory leading the team with eight rebounds as well as two steals and a block. Freshman Daniella Aronsky came off the bench and was the maestro of the second unit contributing three assists and a team high three steals.

Emory had an outstanding day from the free throw line shooting 17-20 for the game, which was the second-best mark in a game this season, including hitting eight of them in the final frame. The Eagles and the Tartans were even in nearly every statistic throughout the game with the biggest differential being Emory's six three pointers made to just two for CMU. The Eagles also did a better job capitalizing on their offensive rebounds as they outscored the Tartans in second chance points, 9-4.

A low scoring first half saw the Eagles go into halftime with a close 28-24 lead over the Tartans but in the second half both teams' offenses exploded. The Eagles scored 20 points in the third quarter alone thanks in large part to the performances of Arato and Brock, including a quarter-ending buzzer better from Brock to give Emory a five-point going into the fourth. It was the final quarter where the Eagles really left their mark, scoring 25 points of their own and outscoring the Tartans by eight. A 9-2 run in the middle of the period, highlighted by the scoring prowess of Arato, gave the Eagles a 10-point edge, the largest gap between the two teams up to that point. From there, Brock was able to ice the game as she scored the final eight points with all of them coming from the free throw line.

The Eagles return home next weekend to host Brandeis and NYU on Friday, January 28 and Sunday, January 30.
