Emory Women's Golf Lands Four On WGCA All-Scholar Team

WGCA All-Scholar Release

Four member of the 2020-21 Emory women's golf team have been recognized for their prowess in the classroom by earning spots on the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-Scholar Team.

The quartet includes rising sophomores Mariana Chong (Lima, Peru), Jessica Lan (Bloomfield, Hills, MI) and Rebecca Schiffman (Chevy Chase, MD) and rising junior Ksheera Jalakam (Frisco, TX).

A WGCA All-South Region honoree, Chong played in all four of Emory's tournaments during the spring and averaged a team-leading 79.9 strokes over 12 rounds of action.  She was the squad's top performer at the Golfweek Invitational (Apr. 2-4) and the MCC Women's Intercollegiate (Apr. 11-12), where she shot the Eagles' top round of the year, a two-under par 70 during the second day of action.  Chosen to the All-University Athletic Association Team, Chong was the first player in program history to be recognized as the league's Women's Golfer of the Week after tying for seventh out of 40 players at the Golfweek Invitational. She would repeat the honor one week later following the MCC Intercollegiate.

Schiffman held down the No. 2 spot on the team's scoring list, posting an average of 80.3 strokes over 12 rounds.  She paced the Emory contingent at the season-opening Jekyll Island Intercollegiate (Mar. 19-21), where her 54-hole score of 237 ranked eighth in the 82-player field, and the NCAA Championships (May 11-14), carding a 72-hole effort of 314 that tied for 15th overall out of the 131 players who started out.  Named to the All-UAA Team, Schiffman's top 18-hole outing came at the MCC Intercollegiate when she totaled a 74 on the opening day of competition.

Jalakam posted an average of 80.5 strokes over her 12 rounds. She was Emory's No. 2 finisher at the Jekyll Island Intercollegiate, the Golfweek Invitational, where she tied for 10th overall on the leader board, and the NCAA D-III Championships where her four-round score of 324 placed her 35th in the field. Jalakam joined Chong and Schiffman as Emory representatives on the All-UAA Team.

Lan saw action in all four events and averaged 81.5 strokes pier round. She was the team's No. 2 scorer and tied for 10th overall out of 50 players at the MCC Intercollegiate with a 36-hole score of 151, with her second-day mark of 75 tying for the squad's third-best individual round of the campaign.

To be eligible for the WGCA All-America Scholar Team, an athlete must have a GPA of 3.50 or higher, played in at least 50 percent of the rounds completed by their team and have high moral character.
