Women's Golf Leads Jekyll Island Collegiate After Day One

After the first round of play, the Emory University sits in first place with a comfortable seven stroke lead at the Jekyll Island Collegiate in Jekyll Island, GA. The three day, 54-hole tournament is being played on the 5,600-yard, par-72 Indian Mound Course at the Jekyll Island Golf Club.

The No. 2 ranked Eagles find themselves in first place after registering a score of 289 in the first round. Emory led the field in total pars (60) and total birdies (13). The Eagles sit in first in the field of 24 teams, 13 of which are ranked in the top 25 in the latest WGCA Top 25 Poll. No. 10 ranked Washington & Lee sits in second trailing the Eagles by seven strokes while No. 3 ranked Methodist rounds out the round one podium with a score of 298.

Freshman Sharon Mun led the way for the Eagles in the first round with a three-under par 69 which sits her in second place through 18 holes. Sophomore Mariana Chong followed close behind carding a 71 which was good for a tie for fourth. Freshman Ellen Dong had a rock-solid day posting a score of 73 which sees her tied for 12th in the field of 120 golfers.

Freshman Heejo Hyun and sophomore Irene Wang each recorded a 76 to round out scoring for the Eagles. Sophomore Jessica Lan, competing as an individual, registered a score of 83 on the first day of play. Centre's Rylee Suttor sits atop the leaderboard through the first round of play with a score of 68.

The Eagles return to action Saturday morning for the second round of play while the third and final round of play at the Jekyll Island Collegiate will commence Sunday morning.
