Women's Golf Builds NCAA Lead; Ellen Dong Ties NCAA Championships Individual Record

The Emory University women's golf team built on their first round performance in the second round on Wednesday afternoon and now hold a commanding first place lead at the NCAA DIII Golf Championships. This year's championships are being played at the 5,866-yard, par-72 Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston, TX.

The No. 1 ranked Eagles sit in first place in the field of 29 teams at the championships after posting a second round score of 296 that brings their 36-hole total to 588 (292-296). The Eagles lead the field in total birdies (30) and the best score on par-4 (+24) and par-5 (-3) holes. Emory holds a sizeable 14-stroke lead on second place No. 7 ranked Pomona-Pitzer (303-299) and is 21 strokes ahead of third place No. 4 George Fox.

Freshman Ellen Dong had a historic day for the Eagles, tying the single round scoring record at the NCAA Championships with a four-under 68. Her score of 68 is also her personal best round and the second best round in program history. Dong birdied three consecutive holes to help her to her record-setting day and she now sits in second place in the individual standings, trailing the first place golfer by a single stroke, with a two-day total of 143 (75-68).

Freshman Sharon Mun showed why she's one of the top freshmen in the country as she hit a one-over 73 for the second consecutive day as she now sits in a tie for fourth place with a 146 (73-73). Freshman Heejo Hyun had an impressive day of her own carding a 76 to bring her two-day total to 148 (72-76) as she now sits tied for 15th. Sophomores Irene Wang and Mariana Chong each posted a second round score of 79 to bring their two day totals to 151 (72-79) and 158 (79-79), respectively.

The Eagles look to continue their record-setting pace in the third round Thursday morning with the first Emory golfer set to tee off at 9:00 AM. At the conclusion of the third round, the field will be cut to the top 15 teams and the top six individuals not on one of those teams to take part in the final round of competition on Friday.
