2021-22 Women's Golf Season Recap

2021-22 Women's Golf Season Recap

In just the third year as a program, the Emory University women's golf team accomplished the remarkable feat of winning a national title with numerous record setting performances along the way in what was a historic season for the young program.

The Eagles, helmed by Katie Futcher, entered the NCAA Championships as the No. 1 overall ranked team and they played like the best team in the country the whole tournament. The Eagles led the entire field after the first round of play, having shot a combined four-over 292 which broke the single round scoring record at the NCAA Championships previously set by Rhodes in 2016. After shooting a 296 on day two, Emory one upped themselves scoring a 291 in the third round breaking their own record from two days prior which allowed them to carry a 24 stroke lead into the final round of play. The Eagles coasted on the final day hitting a 296 to bring their four-round total to 1175 and earning Emory their first ever National Championship. The Eagles' four-round score of 1175 smashed the previous NCAA championship record by nearly 40 strokes and was 24 strokes better in relation to par.

Emory had an immensely successful season outside of the NCAA Championships as well, playing in eight other tournaments and placing first in five of them. The Eagles won their first-ever tournament in program history at the Lynn Schweizer Invitational, Emory's first tournament of the fall season. In what would be a tone setter for the year, the Eagles won the tournament by an unfathomable 38 strokes. The following weekend at the MCC Intercollegiate, the Eagles would win their second consecutive tournament and set a number of records in the process. After hitting a program record 287 in the first round, the Eagles would shatter that mark the next day hitting a 283 which is the current team program record for a single round and the teams two round mark of 570 is also a program record. The Eagles would close out the fall season with a fourth place finish at the Williams College Women's Golf Championship and a come-from-behind tournament win at the Golfweek Invitational.

Opening the spring season with a second place finish at the Savannah Invitational, the Eagles would go on the following weekend to compete at the UAA Championships where they would earn their first-ever conference title. After a rain delay forced the semifinal and finals matches to take place on the same day, Emory emerged victorious defeating Carnegie Mellon in a tight 3-2 contest to capture the UAA crown. The Eagles would ride the momentum from their conference title into the Jekyll Island Collegiate the next weekend where they won the tournament by an astounding 29 strokes and beat the previous three round program record score by 33 strokes in a masterful showing. Emory would close out the regular season with a third place finish at the BSC Panthers Classic.

On top of all the team accomplishments there were just as many notable individual accomplishments as the Eagles earned an individual national champion, three All-American honors, the WGCA National Freshman of the Year, five All-Region nods, three All-UAA members and the UAA and Regional Coach of the Year.

Freshman Ellen Dong played a pivotal role in the Eagles success all year long and capped off her season with an individual championship at the NCAA DIII Championships becoming the first Emory golfer, man or woman, to earn an individual title since 1991 and just the second all-time. Dong was tied with a score of 289 at the end of 72-holes with George Fox's Alison Takamiya and in a tense one-hole playoff between the two, Dong reigned supreme and her score of 289 set a new NCAA Championship record for best tournament score. Her second round score of 68 at the championship also established a new single round record in championship history. For Dong's efforts throughout the season she landed on the All-America Second Team, All-Region and the All-UAA First Team. On top of her impact at the NCAA Championships, Dong played a vital role in the Eagles first ever UAA Championship as she won her match in the one spot against Carnegie Mellon by a 3 & 2 score which eventually earned her the UAA Tournament MVP. Dong finished second on the team in scoring average, posting 73.4 strokes per round. Dong opened the season as the co-champion at the Lynn Schweizer Invitational helping the Eagles to their first tournament win in program history. Dong matched her season best low round of 68 in the first round of the BSC Panthers Classic and her two round score of 141 (68-73) is the best two round score in program history.

Freshman Sharon Mun had a spectacular season as she led the team throughout the season with a program record 73.2 strokes per round. For her efforts across the season, Mun was named the WGCA National Freshman of the Year to go along with spots on the All-America First Team, All-Region and All-UAA First Team. Mun finished in the top 12 in each of the eight tournaments she competed in during the 2021-22 season and led the Eagles in scoring in three tournaments. Mun's score of 294 at the NCAA Championship saw her finish second on the team and 11th overall to help lead the Eagles to their first national title. Mun also secured a victory at the UAA Championships where she won in the three spot in 19 holes to help give Emory a 3-2 edge over Carnegie Mellon. Mun won her first ever tournament at the DIII Golfweek Invitational, registering a 219 to help lead the Eagles to one of its six tournament victories during the 2021-22 season.

Sophomore Irene Wang, in her first full season competing with the team, was one of the more consistent golfers for Emory and earned an All-American Honorable Mention nod as a result. Wang was named the inaugural UAA Sophomore Rookie of the Year along with being named a member of the All-UAA Second Team. Competing at the MCC Intercollegiate early in the season, Wang set the program record for the lowest scoring round when she carded a 67 in the first round of action which helped her to finish in seventh place at the tournament. Wang played a pivotal role in the Eagles first ever UAA Championship, winning her match in the two hole by a score of 2 & 1. A score of 298 saw Wang finish third amongst the Emory contingent and 17th overall at the NCAA Championships on the way to the first national title for the program. Wang won her first tournament at the Lynn Schweizer Invitational where she was named co-champion, alongside teammate Dong, with a score of 144.

Along with the individual accolades for the student-athletes, Futcher was honored with both the UAA Coach of the Year award and the Southeast Region Coach of the Year for helping the Eagles to their immense success throughout the season.

On top of the Eagles prowess on the greens they also had an impressive year in the classroom with all four eligible student-athletes being named to the Spring UAA All-Academic Team. Highlighting that list were Dong, Mun, Wang and sophomore Mariana Chong who were also named to the WGCA Scholar All-America Team.
