Sophomore Class Powers Women's Soccer to 4-0 Win over Birmingham-Southern

The Emory University Women's Soccer team saw four different players, all sophomores, score as the Eagles defeated regional foe Birmingham-Southern College 4-0 on Friday night at Preston Goldfarb Field in Birmingham, Alabama. With the victory, Emory evened its overall record to 3-3 on the year while the Panthers fell to 3-5.

Sophomore Madison Phaneuf began the scoring in the 12th minute with her first career goal, connecting on a long range shot to the upper left hand corner of the net off the feed from junior Melissa Ardizzone. Sophomore Abbe McCarter made it 2-0 seven minutes later as she lofted a shot from the right side that sailed over the outstretched BSC goalkeeper to give Emory a two-goal edge.

Sophomore Grace Edgarton extended the Eagles lead in the 48th minute as she put in the rebound from inside the box following junior Bahar Ulusan's attempt that ricocheted off the post. Sophomore Danielle Darius provided the final margin several moments later as she found the back of the net in the 51st minute, scoring from in front on a through ball from classmate Sophia Dillon and freshman Shivani Beall.

The Eagles controlled possession throughout, outshooting the Panthers 24-1 with an 8-0 mark on shots on goal. Beall and senior Cristina Ramirez led the Emory offense with four shots apiece.

Freshman Haley Pratt earned her first career victory and shutout in her third career start, playing a clean 90 minutes between the posts.

The Eagles will be back in action this Wednesday evening as the team hosts Berry College in the first of two contests at the Woodruff PE Center. The game is set to get underway at 5:00 pm.
