Eagles Upend #23 Centre, 2-1, in Double OT for Third Straight Win

Freshman Caroline Kolski scored just 2:56 seconds into the second overtime period to give the Emory University Women's Soccer team a come-from-behind victory over 23rd-ranked Centre College, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Woodruff PE Center. The Eagles have now won three straight to run their record to 5-3 on the year while the loss was the first of the season for the Colonels as they drop to 8-1-2.

Following an attempt by junior Melinda Altamore that was blocked, the rebound went right to Kolski who finished it home to give the Eagles their biggest win of the season thus far. The tally was Kolski's second of the season while the assist was Altamore's first.

Despite a 9-3 advantage in shots for Emory in the first half, the Eagles trailed 1-0 at the break. Centre's Destinie Graves notched her ninth goal of the season, beating sophomore Dani Staffin on a penalty kick after getting tripped up in the box.

Emory tied the game at one goal apiece in the 75th minute as sophomore Madison Phaneuf registered her second goal of the season. Classmate Sophia Dillon fed Phaneuf at the top of the box with a great through ball which Phaneuf finished past Centre's Olivia Alford. Sophomore Nikki Batt also assisted on the play.

The Colonels had the best opportunity of either team to break the tie in the closing minutes of regulation as Maggie Ely put a header on target following a corner kick by Batt was there on the end line to make the save for the Eagles.

The Emory defense held the Colonels to just seven shots in the game, their second lowest output of the season, outshooting Centre 19-7. In the two overtime sessions, the Eagles did not allow the Colonels to record a single shot attempt.

Emory will look to make it four in a row on Wednesday night as the team travels to Maryville College for a non-conference matchup. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 pm.
