The Emory University Women's Soccer team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon as the Eagles fell to University Athletic Association rival 15th-ranked Washington University by a score of 2-1. With the defeat, Emory drops to 7-4 overall and 1-1 in UAA play while the Bears improve to 9-2-1 and 1-1 in conference action.
It was a defensive battle in the early stages of the contest as both teams combined for eight shots, four each, in the first half. Senior Hannah Meyer had Emory's best scoring opportunity in the 18th minute as she had a shot just go wide on the near post.
WashU broke through first in the scoring column, finding the back of the net in the 33rd minute. Darcy Cunningham flicked one to the far right corner that clanked in off the post to give the Bears a 1-0 advantage. Mariana Alisio had the assist on the play.
Washington made it 2-0 shortly after the break in the 49th minute as Katie Chandler pushed one home past sophomore Dani Staffin. Chandler first had a point-blank shot that was stopped by Staffin but the rebound went to Caroline Dempsey who crossed it back to Chandler who finished it home. Staffin, despite being handed just her second loss of the season, finished the game with a career-high five saves.
Emory cut the deficit to one in the 62nd minute as freshman Morgan Brandewie scored her first career tally. Brandewie was able to get a toe on the loose ball in front to knock it in follow the corner kick by sophomore Jordan Doak.
The Eagles had several chances in the final 10 minutes of regulation but could not find the equalizer. Freshman Caroline Kolski had a volley in midair on the cross from Doak but WashU's Lizzie Crist made the stop. Two minutes later, senior Cristina Ramirez had a shot towards the far post but Crist made another stop to preserve the one goal lead. In the 88th minute, both Kolski and junior Melissa Ardizzone had shot attempts to try and tie the game but both opportunities went wide.
Emory will look to get back in the win column next Friday night as the Eagles play host to UAA foe Case Western Reserve at the Woodruff PE Center. The game is set to get underway at 5:00 pm eastern.
