The Emory University Women's Soccer team wrap up the month a September with a matchup against the No.-2/3 ranked and defending national champions Washington University in St. Louis Saturday afternoon in Atlanta. Game time is set for 1:30 Pm at the Woodruff PE Center.
#21/21 Emory Eagles (6-2)
Emory, who debuted at No.-21 in this week's United Soccer Coaches Association Top-25 poll, enters Saturday's match riding a three-game winning streak, outscoring opponents 17-0 and have scored at least five goals in three straight games, a feat last accomplished by an Emory team back in 1995. Junior Abbe McCarter is off to a strong start to the season, leading the UAA and ranking eighth nationally in assists with seven while adding three goals for 13 points. All figures marking new career-highs for the Charlotte, NC native. Sophomore Caroline Kolski and freshman Anne Otterbein led the team with four goals each while freshman Samantha Hilsee has scored a goal in three straight games. The Emory offense as a whole, ranks 29th in Division III with 9.38 points per game and is 20th nationally with 12.75 shots on goal per game.
The Eagles have been equally as solid on the defensive end led by juniors Danielle Darius, Nikki Batt, sophomore Paige Santee and freshman Lily Dresner, allowing just four goals total and ranking 34th nationally with a 0.49 goals-against average. Emory has allowed just 26 shots on goal for the season, with junior Dani Staffin and sophomore Haley Pratt combining for a .846 save percentage.
#2/3 Washington University in St. Louis (8-0-1)
The Bears, entering play 8-0-1 overall and unbeaten in their previous 23 contests, features strong play on both sides of the ball as the offense has scored 28 goals on the season, averaging 3.11 goals per game, while the defense has allowed just four goals total, good for a 0.43 goals against average. Taylor Cohen is a player to watch on offense for WashU as Cohen leads the UAA in both goals (9) and points (21) heading into action on Saturday. Ellie DeConinck (4-1-9), Jesse Rubin (3-3-9) and Darcy Cunningham (2-5-9) also highlight the Bears offense, tying for second on the team with nine points on the campaign. Emma Greenfield and Katy Hutson have split time between the posts for WashU, combining for six shutouts, a 0.43 GAA and a .800 save percentage. WashU is coached by Jim Conlon who is in his 10th season with the program after serving as both the men's and women's head coach at Wartburg. Conlon has led the Bears to the NCAA tournament in all nine years at the helm including back-to-back appearances in the national championship. He owns a 160-33-16 record at WashU and is 364-138-31 in his career.
All-Time Series
The Eagles lead the all-time series with WashU 15-8-5 dating back to 1989. However, the Bears have closed the gap in recent years as WashU is 3-0-2 in the previous five meetings including a 2-1 victory over Emory in St. Louis last season.
