Facing the toughest regular season slate in all of Division III in 2017, the Emory University Women's Soccer program notched its 29^th consecutive winning season, finishing the campaign with a 10-7-1 overall record.

The Eagles opposed six teams that were ranked at the time of competition, with all six qualifying for the NCAA tournament including Chicago and Johns Hopkins which made Elite Eight runs and the Maroons reaching the national title game. Emory was ranked for seven straight weeks and as high as 19^th in D3Soccer.com's national rankings and were positioned as high as 21^st during a two-week stay in the United Soccer Coaches poll.

The offense featured a well balanced scoring attack with 17 players registering a goal as the Eagles combined for 40 goals, the most by an Emory team since 2013, and ranking 122^nd in Division III with a 2.22 goals per game average. The Eagles tallied 184 shots on goal, the most since 2014 and the ninth most all-time in a single season.

Junior Abbe McCarter, an All-UAA Second Team selection, led all scorers with 17 points with four goals and nine assists. The nine dimes placed her tied for third on the UAA leaderboard and 60^th nationally. She was one of three Eagles to record double-digit points with freshmen Samantha Hilsee and Anne Otterbein registering 12 and 11, respectively. Hilsee topped all goal scorers with six markers on the year.

Defensively, Emory ranked 104^th in the nation with a 0.98 goals-against average, holding opponents to averages of 7.9 shots per game and 4.2 shots on goal. Freshman Lily Dresner was named to the All-UAA First Team after appearing in all 18 contests, making 16 starts on the backline. She added two goals and three assists for seven points on the offensive end. Junior Danielle Darius and senior Anna Gurney, two other vital pieces of the Eagles defensive unit, were honored for their play with Darius joining McCarter on the All-UAA Second Team and Gurney earning her third straight All-Conference Honorable Mention selection. Goalkeepers Dani Staffin and Haley Pratt combined for nine shutouts with each keeper recording five wins between the posts. Staffin saved a team-high 29 shots while Pratt posted a 0.78 GAA.

McCarter began the season on a high note, scoring the game-winning goal with one minute remaining in regulation as the Eagles bested NAIA's Georgia Gwinnett College, 2-1, in the season opener. The win was part of a 3-2-0 opening stretch for the Eagles with the lone blemishes coming against NCAA tournament qualifiers JHU and Christopher Newport.

Following an overtime loss to the Captains, Emory rattled off a season-long three-game winning streak against Birmingham-Southern, Sewanee and Agnes Scott, outscoring the opposition 22-0. During the stretch, the Eagles notched five or more goals in all three games, a feat last accomplished by an Emory team in 1995. McCarter paced all Eagles with 10 points (2G, 6A) over the three-game span including a career-high three assists at Sewanee on September 20^th.

After a 1-2-1 stretch, Emory recorded its best win of the season, defeating No.-22/16 Brandeis University, 3-0, at the WoodPEC. Darius, sophomore Shivani Beall and senior Melissa Ardizzone supplied the offense for the Eagles while Staffin made three stops for the shutout. Beall netted the game-winning score, one of her team-leading three game-winning goals on the year. The win also acted as Emory's first UAA victory of the season.

The Eagles ended the campaign with a 2-0 win over Rochester in the season finale on November 4^th. Hilsee and junior Madison Phaneuf found the back of the net for the Eagles with Pratt saving a pair of shots for her second clean sheet of 2017.

In addition to the four All-UAA honors, Emory excelled in the classroom with 14 UAA All-Academic honorees as well as Staffin being named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District team.

Although the Eagles will see the departures of Ardizzone, Gurney, Melinda Altamore, Lizzie Garrett-Currie, Kaitlyn Dorka and Bahar Ulusan, Emory's 2018 roster will consist of a talented veteran core with the hopes of returning to the NCAA tournament.
