Emory Women's Soccer Plays to 1-1 Tie at NYU

The Emory University Women's Soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against New York University in University Athletic Association action Friday night at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, New York.

After 27 minutes of scoreless play to begin the game, senior Madison Phaneuf broke through with her fifth goal of the season. Following a NYU foul right outside the 18, Phaneuf sent a free kick left of the Violet wall and tucked it inside the near post to put the Eagles in the lead.

Emory held the one goal advantage until the 35th minute mark when Maddie Pena converted on a penalty kick. The goal was Pena's fourth of the year.

The Violets had a great opportunity to grab the go-ahead goal with two minutes remaining in regulation with a breakaway chance but was denied by a clutch two-handed save by senior Dani Staffin, one of her four stops on the night.

After a quiet first overtime period that saw neither team attempt a shot, the Eagles had a pair of chances in the second extra session. Freshman Lindsey Breskow had an attempt from 20 yards out that sailed wide before senior Sophia Dillon put a shot on net but was turned away by NYU's Meghan Marhan. The Violets had a last ditch effort in the final seconds of the contest but Ellie Marks' hurried shot attempt went wide left.

The Eagles, now sitting 8-4-1 overall and 0-2-1 in conference play, head to Waltham, MA for a Sunday afternoon matchup against No. 14/15 Brandeis University starting at 1:30 PM.
