Hilsee's Penalty Kick Strike Gives Women's Soccer OT Win on Opening Night

The Emory University women's soccer team needed an extra 74 seconds Friday night but was able to defeat Sewanee, 2-1 in overtime, as the Eagles began the 2019 season at the Woodruff PE Center in Atlanta, GA.

Senior Caroline Kolski took advantage of a defensive miscue deep in the Sewanee territory, setting herself up with a 1-on-1 with Tigers keeper. Before she was able to get a shot off, defender Kiera Giacomini tackled Koski from behind inside the box, awarding the Eagles a decisive penalty kick and sending Giacomini to the bench with a red card.

Junior midfielder Samantha Hilsee was tasked with converting the penalty box, beating the Sewanee keeper to the right post to give Emory the victory on opening night. For the game, Koski peppered the Tigers with a game-high eight shots including two on goal. Hilsee recorded two shots, one on target, as she picked up her second career game-winning marker.

Adding to the Eagles scoring column was freshman Natalie Klar, who netted her first career goal in the 56th minute following a great centering pass from the end line off the foot of senior Shivani Beall. The Tigers evened the score in the 65th as Giacomini curved in a corner kick to the far post.

For the contest, the Eagles outshot the Tigers 34-5 including a 10-4 margin in shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Haley Pratt made three saves as she won her first match of the season.

Emory rounds out the opening weekend with a Sunday matinee against Lee University. Kickoff at the WoodPEC is set for 1:00 PM.
