Spring boarding off the success of the year prior, the 2019 edition of the Emory University women's soccer team used an extremely deep roster to make a return trip to the NCAA postseason.
Tasked with the 13th toughest strength of schedule in Division III, the Eagles rose to the occasion, delivering the second of back-to-back campaigns with at least 13 wins as well as the program's 31st consecutive winning season as the team finished with an overall record of 13-5 and reached the first round of the NCAA tournament. The Eagles faced off against six teams that advanced to the postseason, posting a 2-4 record which included a win over eventual national semifinalist Carnegie Mellon University on October 20th.
Eight different players registered at least three goals or more throughout the year as Emory turned in its best offensive season statistically in over a decade, ranking 56th among Division III programs with 2.5 goals per game and were top-10 in the country in shots per game, finishing eighth at 24.28.
On the other side of the field, the Eagles were equally as impressive, ranking 42nd nationally in goals-against average (0.716) and finished 67th in shutout percentage (0.5). Emory held opponents to just over four shots on goal per game (4.05) and racked up nine shutouts for the third consecutive season.
Leading the charge offensively was freshman Natalie Klar and seniors Shivani Beall and Caroline Kolski, all of whom reached double figures in points. Klar put forth one of the stronger rookie seasons in recent memory, leading the team with nine goals and 19 points, the most points by an Emory freshman since Emily Feldman turned in 20 points during her freshman year in 2011. Beall and Kolski continued to anchor the Eagles offense with Beall dishing out a team-best six assists while adding five goals for 16 points. Kolski added five tallies on her ledger to go along with three assists as she recorded 13 points.
Beall and Kolski garnered All-University Athletic Association acclaim as offensive performers with Beall earning another All-UAA First Team honor and Kolski being tabbed as an Honorable Mention. Junior Samantha Hilsee had another strong campaign as she joined the duo on the All-UAA Second Team after notching three goals and two assists for eight points.
The Eagles' defensive leaders in freshman Peyton Robertson and senior Haley Pratt were also recognized by the conference with First Team honors as the duo highlighted the stout Emory backline. Robertson, who also garnered the UAA Rookie of the Year award, started all but one game, leading the team in minutes played and registered three goals and two assists for eight points. Between the posts, Pratt put forth a tremendous senior season, ranking as one of the best goaltenders in Division III as she finished 35th in GAA at 0.61 and was 45th with her outstanding .851 save percentage.
The awards continued for the Eagles as Head Coach Sue Patberg and her staff of Valorie O'Brien, Mike Wentzler and Catherine Whitehill were honored as the UAA Coaching Staff of the Year after guiding the team to a 5-2 league record, good enough for a second place finish, the highest finish for the team since 2013. It was the first time Patberg and her staff earned in the award since taking over the team in 2005.
In addition to the UAA accolades, the Eagles also saw Beall, Hilsee and Robertson honored by the United Soccer Coaches Association as the trio collected All-Region acclaim. Beall made her second straight First Team with Hilsee and Robertson named to the Second Team.
Beall closed out her tremendous four-year career as she was selected as a CoSIDA Academic All-American for the first time. She became just the 14th member in team history to earn the distinction.
