Chicago Upends Emory Women's Soccer in UAA Opener

The Emory University women's soccer team fell in the University Athletic Association opener Saturday afternoon, 2-1, to No. 9 ranked University of Chicago at the Woodruff PE Center in Atlanta, GA.

The Maroons remain unbeaten on the year with the victory, moving to 9-0-1, while the Eagles have dropped two straight to slip to 7-2-1 overall.

Emory had more chances during the opening half of play, outshooting the Maroons 7-6 including six shots on goal, and led going into the halftime break, 1-0, thanks to senior Samantha Hilsee's team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 25th minute.

Sophomore Olivia McBerry got around a Maroon defender and crossed the ball into the center of the box where it deflected off the heel of junior Kylie Hall. The loose ball made its way to Hilsee who finished strongly to the top right corner to give the Eagles the 1-0 edge.

Emory held the lead up until the 56th minute when Chicago's Nicole Kaspi evened the score with her sixth marker of the season. Peyton Jefferson's initial attempt was saved by junior Emma Miller, however the rebound found Kaspi who tapped it in for the score.

Six minutes later, UC took the lead as Jefferson finished from inside the six off a great pass around a defender by Maggie Jameson. It was Jefferson's fifth goal of the campaign.

Both teams managed nine shots on goal during the game and Chicago outshot Emory by a slim 15-13 margin. Each side had five corner kicks as well in the evenly matched contest.

The Eagles look to halt their two-game skid Tuesday night as they play Sewanee on the road beginning at 6:00 Pm EDT.
