Emory Women's Soccer Suffers Overtime Heartbreak in NCAA Second Round

The No. 13 ranked Centre College Colonels handed the No. 21 Emory University women's soccer team a heartbreaking overtime defeat in the NCAA Second Round Saturday afternoon at Amend Field in Danville, KY.

Centre's Mills Mullen scored with six seconds remaining in the first overtime period to give the Colonels the 2-1 victory, sending Centre onto the Sweet 16 for the fourth time in program history. The Eagles conclude the season with a 12-5-3 overall record, the team's 32nd consecutive winning season. The Colonels advance to the second weekend and will carry a 17-1-2 record against No. 9 ranked Loras College.

As the 10-second countdown began in the first extra session, Centre's Bri Tilley crossed the ball in from the right wing and found Taylor Gebhart, who sent the ball toward the goal. Senior keeper Emma Platt made a great diving stop on the ball but the deflected ball fell right to Mullen, who quickly hit the back of the net to end the match.

The Colonels' Megan Sidaway found the scoring column first for both sides as she scored in the 23rd minute, connecting on a header for her 11th goal of the season with Mullen picking up the assist from the left wing.

The score remained 1-0 until sophomore Olivia McBerry netted her team-leading eighth goal with a nifty score in the 55th minute, scoring unassisted after deking out a defender.

Centre's Jonelle Barron and the Colonel defense weathered an early attack from the Eagles during the opening minutes of the overtime period as Emory had three shots with two being on frame.

For the game, Emory led Centre 23-18 in total shots, including a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal, and had a slight edge, 9-7, in corner kicks.
