Women's Swimming & Diving 2019-20 Season Recap

Women's Swimming & Diving 2019-20 Season Recap

The Emory University women's swimming and diving team's 2019-20 season was highlighted by the program's 22nd consecutive and 28th overall University Athletic Association team championship in Chicago, IL.

The Eagles, unfortunately, were not able to contend for the team's 11th straight and 13th overall NCAA Division III National Championship as a week prior to the meet, the NCAA made the decision to cancel all remaining winter and spring championships due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Emory was in a good position to be among the nation's highest scoring teams at the meet with 16 swimmers qualifying for the national meet in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Due to the NCAA Championships cancellation, the College Swimming Coaches Swimming Association (CSCAA) changed its selection criteria and awarded all national qualifiers All-America certificates. Senior Caroline Olson and sophomore Taylor Leone led all Eagles with a max of seven of All-America certificates followed by freshman Savannah Sowards with five and senior Maria Turcanu, junior Lucy Daro, sophomore Clio Hancock and freshman Caroline Maki with four awards each.

At the UAA meet in February, the Eagles put forth another dominating performance over their conference counterparts, capturing 10 of the swimming titles to go along with23 All-UAA finishes as the team finished 154 points ahead of second place New York University. Sowards highlighted the Emory award winners as she was named Co-Rookie of the Year. Sowards was an All-UAA performer in the 400 Medley Relay (2nd), 100 Butterfly (3rd) and advanced to the championship final in both the 100 Backstroke (6th) and 200 Backstroke (7th).

In addition to a first-place effort at the UAA Championships, the Eagles took first at both of their home invitationals, was third at the Denison Invitational, fourth at the SCAD Invite and added dual meet victories over Birmingham-Southern, Florida Southern, Delta State and West Florida.

Furthermore, the Eagles were honored by the CSCAA for their classroom pedigree as 16 team members claimed First Team Scholar All-America accolades: Edie Bates, Sarah Byers, Lucy Daro, Allie Dixon, Gaige Elms, Lara Gemar, Anna Glowniak, Clio Hancock, Taylor Leone, Caroline Maki, Caroline Olson, Savannah Sowards, Maria Turcanu, Nina Turcanu, Josie Uerling and Zoe Walker.
