Taylor Leone Wins 50 Freestyle National Title on First Day of NCAA Championships

Senior Taylor Leone headlined the Emory University women's swimming & diving team on day one of the NCAA Championships, winning the national championship in the 50 Freestyle.

For the third straight meet and fourth-time ever an Eagle was crowned champion in the 50 as Leone earned gold with a smooth winning time of 22.72, narrowly beating out Kenyon's Emmie Mirus by a fingertip (22.77) in the splash and dash.

As a team, the Eagles recorded four All-America finishes on Wednesday and established one new school record as Emory ended the night in third place with 91 team points. Kenyon leads the way with 100 points with Denison in second at 94 points through four events.

Senior Clio Hancock, who was announced as the Elite 90 Award winner prior to the start of the finals session, took home the team's first All-America honor of the evening as she placed sixth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:02.47. Junior Caroline Maki reached the podium as well in the 50 Free as she came in fourth with her finals time of 22.94.

One of the best races of the night came in the final event as Kenyon and the Eagles team of Leone, Maki, Megan Jungers and Edie Bates battled it out in the 200 medley relay with both teams posting times that surpassed the previous Division III record of 1:40.11. However, it was the Ladies' team that edged out the Emory quartet by .30 seconds with the Eagles team touching second at 1:39.89.

Emory notched additional points with a pair of All-America Honorable Mention showings as Penelope Helm took 10th in the 500 Freestyle at 4:55.49 and Cailen Chinn finished 15th in the 50 with her 23.59 mark.

The 2022 NCAA Division III Championships continue Thursday with the 200 Freestyle Relay, 400 IM, 100 Butterfly, 200 Freestyle, women's 1-meter diving and the 400 medley relay. Prelims start at 10:00 AM with the finals to follow at 6:00 PM at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, IN.
