Hancock, Jungers Finish as National Runners-Up; Emory Women Narrow NCAA Gap

Led by two national runner-up finishes, the Emory University women's swimming & diving team narrowed the gap Friday night and will head into the final day of competition trailing first-place Kenyon by just four points.

The 2022 NCAA Division III National Championships looks to come down to the wire Saturday night as just 4.5 points separates the top three teams on the women's side.

The Eagles, who are in search of their 11th consecutive national championship and 13th in program history, shaved 29 points off the Ladies' national lead following an evening that included four All-America finishes and three All-America Honorable Mention performances. Kenyon still leads the field with 311 points with Emory moving into second place at 307 points and Denison still in the mix in third with 306.5 points.

Senior Clio Hancock and sophomore Megan Jungers secured back-to-back national runner-up efforts in the 200 Butterfly and 100 Backstroke. Hancock led off the night, improving upon her fifth place prelims time, as she turned in her best individual finish of her career taking second in the 200 Fly at 2:00.66. In the 100 Back, Jungers got off to outstanding start, leading the majority of the race until she was caught at the very end by a tremendous swim by NYU's Jessica Flynn. The two swimmers were separated by just 0.13 seconds with Jungers recording a time of 53.82.

Senior Edie Bates reached the podium in the 100 Breaststroke, taking fifth at 1:01.99 and in the 800 Freestyle Relay, the Eagles team of Hancock, Penelope Helm, Cailen Chinn and Josie Uerling finished sixth at 7:26.48.

Three different swimmers competed in consolation finals as well on the evening with Allie Dixon and Savannah Sowards both turning in 10th place finishes: Dixon in the 200 Fly (2:01.65) and Sowards in the 100 Back (55.54), and Fiona Arwood placing 13th in the 100 Breast with her time of 1:03.39.

With a national championship on the line, the fourth and final day sets the stage with an event lineup featuring the 1,650 Freestyle, 100 Freestyle, 200 Backstroke, 200 Breaststroke, women's 3-meter diving and the 400 Freestyle Relay.
