Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico Named ITA Division III National Rookie of the Year

Freshman Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Division III National Rookie of the Year as announced on Thursday, May 24, via press release by the organization.

Gonzalez-Rico is just the fourth player in Emory Women's Tennis history to earn the distinction, joining Mary Ellen Gordon (2001), Jolyn Taylor (2003) and Gabrielle Clark (2011). The ITA National Rookie of the Year award is just the latest of accolades for the Pinecrest, FL native has received this season as earlier she was named the ITA Atlantic South Region and University Athletic Association Rookie of the Year, the UAA Tournament Most Valuable Player and earned a berth on the All-UAA First Team for both singles and doubles.

In addition, Gonzalez-Rico captured All-America acclaim in singles and doubles in both the fall and spring. During the fall, she claimed the ITA South Regional title in both singles and doubles and advanced to the ITA Division III championship match in both disciplines. In the spring, she advanced to the NCAA Semifinals in doubles with senior Bridget Harding and was seeded second in the NCAA singles bracket after recording a 16-3 record in dual matches, including a 10-2 record at the No. 1 position.

At the conclusion of her freshman season, Gonzalez-Rico posted overall records of 31-7 in singles and 34-7 in doubles, both team highs, leading the Eagles to a national runner-up finish. Her 34 doubles victories with Harding rank as the most in a single season in program history and her 31 singles wins are the second most ever in a single season, trailing only Gordon's mark of 34.
