#1 Women's Tennis Defeats #10 Carnegie Mellon, 8-1, to Open Spring Break Trip

The No.-1 ranked Emory University Women's Tennis team improved to 8-0 in the spring as the Eagles began their spring break trip with an 8-1 victory over No.-10 ranked Carnegie Mellon University at Eastern Florida State College in Melbourne, FL.

The Eagles took two of the three doubles matches to open the match with a 2-1 advantage. Sophomores Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico and Defne Olcay earned an 8-7 (5) decision to improve to 5-2 at first doubles whiles sophomore Stephanie Taylor and freshman Christina Watson won their sixth straight match, improving to 6-0 with an 8-2 victory on court three.

In singles, Gonzalez-Rico, senior Daniela Lopez and freshman Jessica Fatemi notched straight set victories with Gonzalez-Rico winning 6-2, 6-3 on court one, Lopez posting a 6-3, 6-2 win on court two and Fatemi recording the 6-1, 6-3 decision on court six.

Olcay and freshmen Lauren Yoon and Emma Cartledge rounded out the match as all three Eagles registered wins in three-sets. Yoon and Cartledge both rebounded after falling in their first sets to win on courts four and five as Yoon was 2-6, 6-2, 10-5 winner on four and Cartledge a 4-6, 6-0, 10-7 victor on five. Olcay concluded the scoring with a win on court three, earning the 6-7 (4), 6-0, 10-7 triumph.

Top-ranked Emory continues its spring break trip on Thursday and Friday as it faces No.-3 Amherst and No.-7 Wesleyan at Rollins College in Orlando, FL.
