Women's Tennis Opens Fall Slate at Elon

The Emory University women's tennis team opened its fall season Friday, competing at the Elon Invitational at Elon University.

The Eagles posted a combined record of 4-5 across five singles draws on the first day of competition and as a team, were 5-4 across three doubles brackets. Along with Emory, other schools competing at the three-day invitational include Elon, East Tennessee State, Furman, UNC-Greensboro, Mercer, Presbyterian, Radford, North Central College, Gardner Webb and USC Upstate.

Highlighting singles play on Friday were junior Katie Chang and sophomore Lauren Yoon advancing in the Phoenix draw with wins against Presbyterian and UNCG foes. Chang posted the 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 comeback victory over PC with Yoon recording a straight set decision 6-3, 7-6 (4).

Adding singles wins on the afternoon were freshman Stephanie Shulman and junior Sasha Hartje. Shulman topped NCCU's Sofia Miller 7-5, 6-3 to advance in the Powell draw while Hartje bested PC's Shelly Ray 6-1, 6-3 in the Oak bracket.

In doubles play, Shulman and sophomore Emma Cartledge reached the semifinals of the Gold bracket with 6-4 and 6-3 decisions against UNCG and Presbyterian opposition. Over in the main doubles draw, junior Defne Olcay and sophomore Jessica Fatemi won their first round match against USCU, 6-4, before dropping the next tilt, 7-6 (5), to ETSU.

The duos of junior Stephanie Taylor and freshman Katelyn Thomas and sophomore Christina Watson and freshman Alexa Goetz added consolation round wins with Taylor/Thomas defeating a team from Radford, 6-3, and Goetz/Watson getting past a Mercer pairing, 6-4.

Singles and doubles action from Elon, North Carolina will continue Saturday morning.
