The Emory University women's tennis team is headed back to the ITA National Indoor Championships title match for the fourth consecutive season after handling Pomona-Pitzer, 8-1, in the semifinal round.
The Eagles advance to take on top-seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in Sunday's championship in a rematch of last's year title match. For the second straight match, Emory opened play with a sweep of the doubles matches to jump out in front early. At first doubles, junior Stephanie Taylor and sophomore Christina Watson claimed an 8-3 win while junior Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico and sophomore Jessica Fatemi doubled up their opponents, 8-4, on court two. The match at the third position needed a tiebreaker to decide a winner with freshman Alexa Goetz and Katelyn Thomas edging out the win 8-7 (7-0).
Five of the six singles matches went the way of the Eagles with four coming in straight sets. Emory saw straight set wins from sophomore Emma Cartledge (6-1, 6-2) and Thomas (6-3, 6-1) at the fourth and sixth spots to help the Eagles earn the two wins needed to clinch the win.
Gonzalez-Rico added a straight set win at first singles 6-3, 6-2 as did Fatemi on court five, 6-4, 6-1. Watson rounded out the singles winners for the Eagles, earning the 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-1) victory on court three.
Emory will take a 4-1 spring record into Sunday's title match while CMS is 9-0 overall and defeated Carnegie Mellon, 9-0, in the ITA semifinals Saturday afternoon.
