Women's Tennis Well-Represented on All-UAA Team

Six members of the Emory University women's tennis team were tabbed to the University Athletic Association Team as the league released its All-Association roster Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles went 6-3 during the truncated spring season including a 4-1 record against Division III foes and the team's fourth consecutive appearance in the ITA National Indoors Team Championship match.

Emory saw four players selected for their play in singles: junior Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico, sophomores Christina Watson and Emma Cartledge and freshmen Alexa Goetz. For doubles, the Eagles saw two tandems picked for All-UAA acclaim with first doubles duo Watson and junior Stephanie Taylor as well as third doubles team featuring Goetz and classmate Katelyn Thomas.

After returning to the courts following a semester abroad, Gonzalez-Rico makes her third straight All-UAA appearance at first singles, posting a 5-2 record at the No. 1 position. She went 4-1 against Division III opponents with all four victories coming in straight sets and picked up a victory against Penn State's No. 1 player, Gabby O'Gorman, winning 7-5, 6-1.

Goetz earns her first career All-UAA selection in singles after going 6-2 during the spring and was 5-1 at the No. 3 position. Four of her wins came during Division III competition including a three-set win against CMS' Rebecca Berger in the ITA National Indoors title match. Her other two wins came during dual matches against Georgia Gwinnett College and Lehigh University. For the year, Goetz tied for the team lead with 15 singles triumphs, posting a 15-5 overall record, and highlighted the Eagles in the fall, claiming the ITA South regional crown and reaching the quarterfinals at the ITA Cup.

For Watson, she joins Goetz as a first-time All-UAA honoree as she earns the kudos for her play at fourth singles. During the spring, Watson registered a 6-3 record and was 3-2 at the fourth position and picked up a win over CMS' Sydney Lee in the indoor championship match. Watson was one of four Eagles to record double-digit singles victories for the year, finishing 11-7 overall, and reached the semifinals of the ITA South regional tournament in the fall.

Cartledge rounds out the Emory singles selections as she collects her second straight All-UAA honor at the No. 5 spot. Cartledge led the Eagles with seven wins during the spring, going 7-1 during dual matches, and tied Goetz for the team lead with 15 singles victories, ending the year at 15-7 overall. She closed out the spring on a seven-match winning streak and recorded a 6-3, 6-2 win over Devon Wolfe of CMS in the indoor title match. In the fall, Cartledge was 8-6, reaching the finals of the ITA regional tournament and was one of 16 qualifiers for the ITA Cup singles draw.

In doubles, Watson and Taylor was one of the team's two pairings to earn All-UAA selections. The duo went 4-5 at the No. 1 spot during the spring season, collecting wins against SCAD, Brandeis, Pomona-Pitzer and Lehigh. Goetz and Thomas joined them as Emory's doubles All-UAA picks after posting an unblemished spring season. The freshman duo went 9-0 overall and were 7-0 in matches played at the third position which included a 3-0 run at the No. 3 spot during the national indoor championships.

Gonzalez-Rico (#3) and Goetz (#21) concluded the year ranked among the top-50 Division III singles players in the country while Taylor/Watson were ranked as the 13th doubles tandem in the nation at year's end.
