The 2021-22 season marked a return to a full competition schedule for the Emory University women's tennis program as the Eagles were able to compete in both the fall and spring for the first time in three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Going back to a full slate of matches, the Eagles went 10-10 in dual matches and advanced to the NCAA Division III quarterfinals for the 14th consecutive season. In addition, Emory finished as the national runner-up at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship as well as the runner-up at the University Athletic Association Championships at the end of April.
Five players earned ITA All-America recognition for their play during the season with freshman Eliza McPherron highlighting the selections with her play in singles. McPherron burst onto the scene in the fall as she blazed through the ITA regional scene, winning the South regional crown before capturing the Division III title at the ITA Cup in October. She went on to lead the team in singles wins with 21 and played the majority of the spring at the No. 1 position, going 6-7 in 13 matches on the one line. For her efforts, McPherron was named the ITA Atlantic South Freshman of the Year.
In doubles, senior Christina Watson and sophomore Ana Cristina Perez made a run to the national quarterfinals at the NCAA Individual Championships to help earn All-America acclaim. The tandem won a team-best 15 matches and were 13-5 across the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in the lineup. Rounding out the Emory All-America selections was the doubles duo of junior Alexa Goetz and sophomore Xuanjin Li who claimed the ITA South Regional title and reached the quarterfinals at the ITA Cup.
After falling to the University of Chicago in dramatic fashion in the finals of the National Indoor Championships at the beginning of March, the two teams met again on the courts in the finals of the UAA Championships six weeks later. However, the Maroons bested the Eagles for a second time, snapping Emory's streak of seven straight UAA titles.
At the conclusion of competition in Orlando, four players were honored by the Association for her their performances. Perez was named the Sophomore Rookie of the Year, an award given to a second-year that missed out on competing in UAA competition the year before due to the pandemic. She was one of three Eagles named to the All-UAA First Team, earning the distinction for her doubles play with Watson. McPherron added First Team honors with her play in singles. Watson and junior Stephanie Shulman rounded out the All-UAA selections as they both were named to the Second Team in singles.
In the final rankings released in June, the Eagles had two players ranked inside the top-40 nationally in singles: McPherron (#19) and senior Emma Cartledge (#36) with the doubles team of Watson/Perez checking in fifth nationally. McPherron and Cartledge were two of four players ranked in the top-20 in singles regionally with Watson/Perez (#1) and Cartledge/Goetz (#13) being ranked regionally in doubles.
