Stephanie Shulman Captures ITA Regional Singles Title in Straight Sets

Senior Stephanie Shulman captured the ITA South Regional crown Sunday afternoon on the final day of the tournament in Atlanta.

Shulman became the latest Eagle to take home the regional singles title, defeating Sewanee's Alice Hall in convincing fashion 6-1, 6-1 in the championship match. With the victory, Shulman secures a spot in next month's ITA Cup and earns All-America honors for the first time in her career. Emory has now claimed the last 20 ITA Regional singles titles.

Earlier in the day, Hall bested freshman Iris Berman in a three-set thriller that surpassed the three hour mark to advance to the finals. Berman saw herself in a 3-0 hole to open the match before storming back to take a 4-3 lead. Hall held serve to tie it at 4-4 before back-to-back breaks made it 5-5. Berman won four straight points on serve to move in front 6-5 but then Hall held to force a tiebreak. Berman won the first four points en route to winning the tiebreak, 7-3.

Following a brief rain delay prior to the start of the second set, Berman rode the momentum to take a 3-0 lead before Hall regrouped and rattled off six straight games to win the set 6-3. Hall continued the run into the third set, winning the first three games before Berman broke to make it 3-1. However, Hall would win the next three to win the match 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-1.

The Eagles will return to action the weekend of October 7-9 with the Georgia Southern Shootout in Statesboro, GA.
