Emory Volleyball Sweeps Sunday UAA RRII Matches vs. Brandeis & Wash U

The Emory University volleyball team closed out a 4-0 weekend of play at the University Athletic Association Round Robin II on Sunday, registering wins over Brandeis and Washington University.  The No. 12-ranked Eagles swept both the Judges (25-22, 25-22, 25-21) and the No. 9 Bears (25-19, 25-18, 25-20) to raise their record to 17-5 overall, 6-1 in the conference.

Emory's defense was solid in both matches, holding Brandeis to an attack percentage of .120 (26-16—83) and Wash U to .136 (26-15—81). On the offensive side of things, the Eagles recorded a hitting mark of .217 against Brandeis before posting a .317 effort (46-14—101) against the Bears, the seventh time this season they finished with a .300 or higher hitting percentage.

Senior Karissa Dzurik was the team's top attacker in both encounters, chalking up a dozen terminations against Brandeis and a match-high 15 against Wash U, her fifth straight and 15th performance of double digits this season.  Dzurik closed out the Round Robin II averaging a team-high 4.25 kills per set while hitting .300 (51-15—120).  Freshman Tara Martin gave the Eagles a boost, picking up six kills in the opening match of the day before placing second on the team in the Wash U affair with eight successful attack attempts en route to a . 583 (8-1—12) hitting percentage.

A key factor in the two wins was Emory's serve that resulted in a total of 21 aces, 10 vs. Brandeis and 11 vs. Wash U. Freshman Kelsey Meins dished out three aces in both matches while senior setter Mady Arles accounted for three against Brandeis before adding a pair against Wash U to go along with 30 assists, six kills in as many attempts and six digs.

Emory concluded the UAA Round Robin II hitting .284 (181-60—426) over the four matches vs. .135 (110-61—362) for the four opponents.

The Eagles return to action on Thursday (Oct. 18) when they play at Agnes Scott.
