Maureen Schick Named Second Team Academic All-American

Emory University senior defensive specialist Maureen Schick (Hobart, WI) has been recognized for her performance both on the court and in the classroom by being named to the 2019 Academic All-America® Division III Volleyball Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).  Schick was selected to the second team.

Schick becomes the sixth member of the volleyball program to be named an Academic All-American, the first since Sydney Miles in 2015, and the 192nd in the history of Emory Athletics to earn the distinction.

Schick saw action in 122 of the Eagles' 135 sets during the 2019 season and helped the squad rank as one of the top defensive teams in the nation.  She averaged 1.72 digs per game including a career-best 20 in a four-set victory over Cal Lutheran.  Schick posted four matches of double-figure digs, one of which came in a five-set win against Carthage College in the semifinals of the NCAA D-III Championship. She handled over 95 percent of her reception opportunities successfully, which helped play a part in Emory leading the UAA while ranking among the top 15 nationally in attack percentage.  The Eagles closed out the campaign with a 34-3 won-lost record which included a national runner-up finish.

Academically, Schick, a Nursing major, was nominated with a 4.00 grade-point average.

To be eligible for the Academic All-America honor, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution, be voted to the first team of the all-district team and be nominated by his sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
