Emory Volleyball Edges Carnegie Mellon In UAA Round Robin 1 Finale

The No. 5-ranked Emory volleyball team closed out action at the University Athletic Association Round Robin 1 on Sunday with a victory over Carnegie Mellon.  The Eagles raised their overall record to 10-2, 3-0 in the UAA, following a 3-2 decision (25-16, 14-25, 25-19, 23-25, 15-10) over the Tartans who fell to 5-5 in overall action, 2-1 in the league.

Emory spread out its offensive attack with four players registering double-figure kills. Senior Tara Martin headlined the quartet with a season-high 18 terminations while contributing 13 digs, her fourth double-double of the year.  The freshman trio of Alana Dawson, Lily Martin and Madison Cail combined for 36 successful attack attempts with Dawson and Martin finishing with 13 and 12, respectively, while Cail totaled 11.  Cail, who hit .476 (11-1—21), also played a key role defensively with five (1-4) total blocks.  Freshman Deborah Hong topped all players with 19 digs and doled out five service aces.

In the deciding fifth set, the score was deadlocked at 8-8 before three straight kills by Tara Martin staked the Eagles to an 11-8 edge.  After a Tartan point, Emory used a kill by setter Sarah Luong followed by an attack error by CMU to post a 13-9 advantage. A kill by Tara Martin put the Eagles one point away from the perfect weekend, with that shortly taking place when the Tartans suffered a hitting miscue.

For the match, Emory hit .242 (62-24—157) compared to CMU's .175 (53-26—154).  The Eagles finished with a 56-51 lead in digs and registered 10 total blocks to the Tartans' six.

Emory returns to action on Wednesday (Sept. 22) when it plays at crosstown rival Oglethorpe in a 6:00 pm start.
