Emory Volleyball Captures Four-Set Win Over Lee

Emory Volleyball Captures Four-Set Win Over Lee

The Emory volleyball team kept its win streak intact Tuesday evening as it posted a home victory over Lee University.  The Eagles nabbed their sixth straight victory and raised their overall record to 12-2 following a 3-1 verdict (25-12, 21-25, 25-19, 26-24) over the Flames who dipped to 4-6.

Freshman Lily Martin headed up the Emory attack with 11 kills, her seventh double-figure effort of the season, while junior Abby Heimlicher posted a career-high 10 terminations, ending the contest hitting a match-best .615 (10-2—13).  Heimlicher was a defensive factor as well, topping all players with a personal-best six (1-5) total blocks.  Freshman Jessica Majka hit .533 on the strength of nine kills with just one miscue in 15 swings while classmates Madison Cail and Alana Dawson each finished with eight successful attack attempts.

In the fourth set, Emory faced a 13-9 deficit following a kill by the Flames' Calina Croy.  The Eagles responded with a 10-3 charge, highlighted by a pair of kills by Lily Martin and service aces by Sarah Luong and Deborag Hong, to claim a 19-16 edge.  Lee countered with four straight points before a kill by senior Tara Martin evened the score at 20-20.  The teams split the next six points leaving the score deadlocked at 23-23.  Lee was one point from forcing a fifth set following a successful swing by Emma Flowers, but Emory closed out the match by accounting for the final three points, started by a kill from sophomore Carly Wallace, followed by a pair or errors by the visitors.

Emory ended with a .250 hitting percentage (55-22—132) compared to Lee's .206 (44-18—126). The Eagles held a 54-49 margin in digs, with Hong leading the team with 16, and closed out with an 8-5 margin in total blocks.

No. 7-ranked Emory returns to action on Sunday (Oct. 3) when it travels to Brandeis University to compete in the UAA Round Robin 2.  The Eagles will square off against Washington University at noon, followed by a 2:00 meeting with New York University.
