Whetstone, Martin Named UAA Cross Country Athletes of the Week

Emory University juniors Jack Whetstone (Glenview, IL) and Susie Martin (Westport, CT) have each been honored by the University Athletic Association as its Cross Country Athletes of the Week after their stellar performances at the Rhodes College Invitational held at Shelby Farms in Memphis, Tennessee. This marks the second time this month that Whetstone has earned the recognition, while Martin is receiving the award for the first time in her career.

Whetstone pushed his Eagles to a fourth-place finish, recording a 24:56.8 in the 8K race and finishing 12th out of 213 competitors. The junior was the first non-DI racer to cross the line and his effort allowed his team to defeat Cincinnati, a DI program, by 21 points and claim the top spot among the non-DI schools.

Like Whetstone, Martin proved to be the strongest participant from the non-DI schools. She clocked a 22:07.1 in her 6K, which was good enough for 18th out of 182 runners. The Eagles used the junior's effort to take sixth place out of 21 teams, and second out of the 17 non-DI programs.

Both teams will take the upcoming weekend off before preparing for the Louisville Sports Commission Classic, which is set to take place on Saturday, October 5 at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky.
