Emory Athletics Weekly Preview - January 17th - 23rd

The Emory Athletics Weekly Preview for January 17th – January 23rd. This preview is to serve as a weekly snapshot of all upcoming Emory athletic events for the coming week.

(NOTE: Due to the recent surge with the Omicron variant, there will be no spectators at all home events until further notice)

 

Men's Basketball:

In its first full weekend of conference play, the Emory University men's basketball team split contests, falling to WashU but earning an emphatic victory over Chicago. This week the Eagles (9-4, 2-1) take to the road where they will face off against No. 25 ranked Case Western Reserve (12-1, 2-0) on Friday before traveling to Pittsburgh, PA for their game against the Tartans of Carnegie Mellon (8-4, 1-1) on Sunday. The Eagles continue to be led by senior Matthew Schner as he has been the team's leading scorer for six consecutive games and most recently was tabbed to the Bevo Francis Award Watch List.

The Eagles lead 35-21 in the all-time series including a current string of 19 victories across the previous 22 meetings. The two sides split the season series during the 2019-20 season with Emory winning 106-70 at home and dropping a tight 83-78 decision on the road. The Eagles hold a slim 15-14 edge in all-time games played in Cleveland.

Emory has won 13 consecutive meetings against Carnegie Mellon, bringing the all-time series to 43-22 in favor of the Eagles. The Tartans are 17-16 at home in the series however Emory has won seven in a row in Pittsburgh, including a 98-86 victory the last time the two programs squared off back in February 2020.

Women's Basketball:

The Emory University women's basketball team had an impressive showing in its first full weekend of conference play, going 2-0 with convincing victories at home over WashU and Chicago. The Eagles (8-4, 2-1) take the court again this weekend for another double weekend, first taking on the Case Western Reserve Spartans (6-8, 1-2) in Cleveland before making the trek to Pittsburgh for their matchup against the Tartans of Carnegie Mellon (8-4, 2-1). Junior Claire Brock continues her breakout season as she has averaged 18.8 points over her last six games and was recently named the UAA Athlete of the Week for the second time this season.

CWRU leads the all-time series by a slim 28-26 margin but the Eagles have controlled the series of late, winning six of the last eight meetings including a series sweep during the 2019-20 season. Against Carnegie Mellon, Emory has won six consecutive matchups, increasing the series win-loss record to 42-21 in favor of the Eagles. Emory has won three straight on the road versus CMU, including a 66-53 win back in February 2020, and are 18-14 all-time in games played in Pittsburgh.

Indoor Track & Field:

After both the men's and women's teams finished second overall in the team scoring at the Emory Crossplex Showdown this past Sunday, the Eagles' indoor track & field teams return to the same complex this weekend for the Samford Bulldog Open. The Eagles will travel a large contingent to Birmingham, AL on Saturday, where they will face off against various high level regional opponents.

Swimming & Diving:

The Emory University swimming & diving teams travel to Pensacola, FL this weekend for a tri-meet against West Florida and Delta State. The Eagles women's team will compete against both West Florida and Delta State on Saturday, January 22nd, with the men competing solely against Delta State.
