The Emory Athletics Weekly Preview for February 7th – February 13th. This preview is to serve as a weekly snapshot of all upcoming Emory athletic events for the coming week.

Swimming & Diving:

The Emory University swimming & diving teams play host to the UAA Championships this week where they will be competing against some of the top teams in the nation for the conference crown. The Eagles men's team ranks No. 1 in the country in the latest CSCAA Coaches Poll and some of their competition includes No. 5 Chicago, No. 7 WashU, No. 8 NYU, No. 10 Carnegie Mellon, and No. 17 Case Western Reserve. The men's team has won 22 consecutive UAA titles with the most recent championship coming down to the final relay race that gave Emory the slight edge over Chicago to take home the 2020 crown. The Eagles women's team ranks No. 2 in the country and their competition includes No. 6 NYU, No. 7 Chicago, No. 12 WashU and No. 14 Carnegie Mellon. The Emory women's team has won 22 consecutive UAA titles and 28 overall as they won in resounding fashion during the 2020 Championships in Chicago, IL.

Baseball:

The Emory University baseball team will open the 2022 season at home against regional rival Berry College on Tuesday at 2 PM. The Eagles follow up their opener against Berry with a three game series against the Covenant Scots this weekend. After a shortened 2021 season saw the Eagles go 7-5 with no postseason play, Emory returns to the field this year with a full 40-game slate and hopes of a return to the postseason. Notably, the Eagles return senior Robby Wacker, who led all returning players in batting average, hits, and RBI last season, as well as senior Zeke Diamond who started 11 of 12 games for the Eagles in 2021 and finished the season with eight runs and three RBI. The Eagles pitching staff will be highlighted by seniors Jack Moore, Joey Bock and Jack Brodsky. Moore is coming off a season in which he started five games for the Eagles and will be the opening day starting pitcher for the Eagles against the Vikings. Bock had an outstanding season in 2020 earning a 4-0 record with a 2.19 ERA and he led the team in strikeouts with 27. Brodsky is coming off a solid season, starting three games, earning a 2-0 record while striking out 11 over the course of the season. Emory goes into its game against Berry with a 12-13 head-to-head series record and are 13-8 all-time against Covenant.

Softball:

The Emory University softball team will open its 2022 season with a doubleheader against regional foe Maryville on Saturday. After a condensed 2021 season in which the Eagles went 9-2 and did not participate in postseason play, they return to the field with a full 39-game slate and hopes of a return to the postseason. The Eagles notably return senior Mattie Ryan, sophomore Paige Nellis and senior Megan Weisenberg to their batting order as they look to come out of the gates swinging this year. Ryan returns after having hit .545 last season with a team high 18 hits and 11 runs to go along with six RBI. Nellis is coming off an impressive freshman campaign where she was second on the team with a batting average of .419 and also accumulated 13 hits, eight runs and 8 RBI. Weisenberg is back in the fold for her senior season having led the team last season with 11 RBI to go along with 14 hits and six runs. On the pitching staff, Emory returns sophomore Natalie Swift who finished her rookie season with an ERA of 4.94 and a record of 1-1 in her four starts. Emory enters its doubleheader with Maryville this weekend with a 47-10 all-time head-to-head record against the Scots.

Men's Basketball:

The Emory University men's basketball team stays on the road this weekend as they look to hold on to its conference-best record. The No. 20 ranked Eagles (15-4, 8-1) ride their seven-game winning streak into St. Louis, MO where they will face off against No. 9 ranked WashU (15-3, 5-2) on Friday in hopes of avenging their lone conference loss before traveling to Chicago, IL for their rematch against the Chicago Maroons (7-12, 2-6) on Sunday. Emory's 72-61 loss to WashU earlier in the season brought their all-time head-to-head series record to 17-50 in the Bears favor. Against Chicago, the Eagles handily defeated them earlier this season 83-68 to bring the all-time head-to-head series record between the two to 29-39 to the Maroons. Senior Nick Stuck had one of the best weekends of his career, first hitting a buzzer beater against Brandeis to send the game to overtime and led the Eagles to eventual victory before nearly recording a triple-double in the Eagles victory over NYU with a stat line of 17 points, nine assists, and seven rebounds.

Women's Basketball:

The Emory University women's basketball team, coming off a 1-1 weekend, will take to the road for two more conference matchups. The Eagles (12-6, 6-3) travel to St. Louis, MO for their rematch against the Bears of WashU (11-8, 5-3) before traveling to Chicago, IL for their final duel against the Chicago Maroons (12-7, 5-4). With Emory's 60-56 victory over WashU earlier this year their all-time head-to-head series record was moved to 8-56 in favor of the Bears. The Eagles defeated the Maroons earlier this year by a score of 55-47 which brought their all-time head-to-head record to 22-41 with Chicago holding the advantage. Junior Claire Brock was unstoppable for the Eagles this past weekend averaging 22.5 points per game over these last two while shooting a blistering 73.9% from the field and 60% from three.

Men's Tennis:

The Emory University men's tennis team opens the 2022 spring season and its defense of the 2021 NCAA Championship against Georgia Gwinnett on Saturday at 1 PM. The Eagles had a successful fall season in which teammates Andrew Esses and Sahil Raina took home the ITA South Region doubles crown.

Indoor Track & Field:

After a successful weekend at the Camel City Invite, the Emory University indoor track & field teams will travel to Birmingham, AL one last time for the Bulldog Open at the Birmingham Crossplex. The Eagles continue to work themselves into shape for the postseason with the UAA Indoor Championships being just two weeks away.
