Six Eagles Named UAA Athletes of the Week

Six Eagles were honored as University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week Monday afternoon, marking the highest weekly award winners for the department for the 2021-22 academic year.

Senior Matthew Schner collected his fourth AOW of the season and seventh of his career while fellow senior Mattie Ryan earned her second career weekly honor. For senior Jack Moore and sophomores Logan D'Amore, Steven Hunt and Page Nellis Monday represented the first time in each respective career they have been named an UAA Athlete of the Week.

Schner was unstoppable for the men's basketball program leading the Eagles to two wins that helped the team clinch the UAA championship. Schner dropped a career-high 39 points in Friday's clincher over Case Western Reserve, the second-highest single-game point total in team history before adding 28 points in Sunday's overtime win over Carnegie Mellon including the game-winning jumper with 4.0 seconds left in OT. Schner made 51.9% of his shots in the two games while adding 9.5 rebounds per game, two assists, three steals and a block.

D'Amore recorded a trio a season best times as the Eagles sent a group of swimmers to the two-day Royal Open this past weekend. D'Amore took first in both the 500 Free (4:29.84) and 200 Free (1:39.00) and clocked a 21.07 during the 50 Free time trials. D'Amore now ranks 26th in Division III in the 500 Free and 28th nationally in the 200 Free.

In softball's doubleheader sweep over Agnes Scott, Ryan picked up the win in both contests while giving up two earned runs in 6.2 innings pitched. In game one, Ryan pitched a complete game and struck out three while giving up just one walk to help Emory earn a resounding 10-2 victory in five innings. In game two, Ryan came in to the game in the top of the sixth inning with the Eagles trailing 6-2 and didn't give up a single earned run and was pivotal in helping lead Emory to their come from behind victory. She struck out two batters and gave up a single hit in her 1.2 innings of work. Ryan was also a standout in the lineup, going 5-for-6 at the plate over the two games for four runs and one RBI.

Nellis had a strong showing against the Scotties as she went 4-for-7 at the plate and contributed three runs and two RBI, including three extra base hits. Her shining moment came in the bottom of the sixth in the second game with Emory trailing by one and the bases loaded. Nellis stepped in and smashed a double into the outfield to score all three runners to put the Eagles in the lead where they eventually earned the victory.

Baseball took the opener from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday behind Moore's excellent outing on the mound. Moore was dealing as he picked up win #2 on the year as the Eagles won 9-3. Moore tossed six strong innings of one-run ball while striking out six batters. He did not allow an extra base hit and issued only two free passes in the outing.

During the series, Hunt carried the Eagles offense as he had a big weekend at the plate. Hunt finished the series 7-for-10 with two doubles, one home run and eight RBI. He had at least one hit and one RBI in all three games of the series including a 4-for-4 effort with four RBI in Saturday's near comeback loss. Hunt added three walks and a steal as he slugged 1.200 to go along with a .769 on-base percentage.
