Emory Athletics Weekly Preview: 10/3 - 10/9

The Emory Athletics Weekly Preview for October 3rd – October 9th. This preview is to serve as a weekly snapshot of all upcoming Emory athletic events for the coming week.

 

Men's Golf:

The Emory University men's golf team is back in action this week, recently taking third place at the Gate City Invitational, competing at the 54-hole NCAA DIII Preview in Nicholasville, KY. The second and third rounds of the tournament are being played on the 6,694-yard, par-72 Keene Trace Golf Club course. The No. 2 ranked Eagles began competition on Sunday and will play in the second and third rounds on Monday and Tuesday, respectively. Through one round of play the Eagles sit tied for fifth after notching a score of 299 as well as the second most pars at the tournament with 55. Sophomore Michael Burry sits tied for first, after finishing tied for eighth at the Gate City Invitational, with a two-under par 70 as he looks to lead Emory up the leaderboard over the course of the final two rounds. In the field of 18 teams 16 of them were in the most recent GCAA DIII Top 25 Coaches Poll including No. 1 Methodist, No, 3 Huntingdon, No. 4 Carnegie Mellon, No. 5 Christopher Newport, No. 6 Piedmont, No. 9 Illinois Wesleyan and No. 10 Wittenberg. At the 2021 NCAA DIII Preview, the Eagles closed the tournament in sole possession of second place with Emory's top four golfers each finishing in the top 20.

Women's Soccer:

The Emory University women's soccer team continues to ride high having now won five straight contests including a 3-0 thrashing of conference rival WashU on Saturday as they begin to head into the heart of the conference schedule this week. The Eagles (6-2-0, 1-0-0) start the week with a home matchup against Oglethorpe (3-4-1) on Tuesday evening at 5:00 PM before taking to the road for their faceoff against the Chicago Maroons (7-3-1, 0-0-1) on Saturday at 2:30 PM. Emory is a perfect 23-0 against the Stormy Petrels of Oglethorpe all-time with the most recent match in 2018 a 9-0 drubbing by the Eagles. The Eagles versus the Maroons has been a much closer affair, with Emory holding a slight 17-15-3 advantage all-time, however, Chicago has captured the last four matchups between the two. With their 1-0 conference record the Eagles are currently tied for the conference lead with Case Western Reserve as each team delves deeper into their conference slate. The Eagles put on a show against the Bears of WashU on Saturday with senior Kylie Hall pouring in a goal and an assist, with the assist marking her tenth of the season which is tied for the second most in the nation.

Men's Soccer:

Coming off a tough loss to WashU on Saturday, the Emory University men's soccer team looks to right the ship with two matches this week against familiar foes. The Eagles (2-4-4, 0-1-0) will first face-off against cross-town nemesis Oglethorpe (4-4-1) on Tuesday evening at 7:30 PM at the Woodruff PE Center before traveling to Chicago, IL at 12:00 PM on Sunday to take on the No. 1 ranked Chicago Maroons (10-0-0, 1-0-0) who are perfect so far this season. The Eagles hold a significant 33-6-2 advantage over Oglethorpe in the all-time head-to-head matchups between the two, with the most recent contest ending in a 2-1 result in favor of Emory. The Chicago matchup has also leaned Emory's direction, with the Eagles holding a 21-10-3 series advantage over the Maroons, however, Chicago has emerged the victor in the last three matches against the Eagles. Despite falling to WashU, senior Joe Beare tallied a goal for the second consecutive game as he is now tied for second on the team in goals scored this season.

Men's Tennis:

The Emory University men's tennis team will open their season at the hurricane-delayed ITA South Regional Championships this weekend while also sending a small portion of the team to the Grizzly Open. The three-day ITA South Regional Championships will take place from Friday through Sunday in Rocky Mount, NC while the Grizzly Open is set to take place in Lawrenceville, GA from Friday through Sunday as well. The Eagles will look to continue their success at the ITA South Regional Championships having won 13 of the last 15 singles titles as well as the 2021 doubles crown. The Eagles return one half of the ITA South Regional doubles championship team in senior Andrew Esses while the ITA doubles finalist teams of senior Sam Dean and junior Sujay Sharma also return. On the singles side, junior Nolan Shah looks to improve upon his semifinalist finish from last year at the ITA Regional Championship. The Eagles will also welcome seven newcomers to the squad this season who look to help propel Emory to even greater heights.

Women's Tennis:

The Emory University women's tennis team is back in action this weekend at the Georgia Southern Shootout in Statesboro, GA. The Eagles, coming off of senior Stephanie Shulman capturing the ITA South Regional singles championship, look to continue their strong season against some of the top talent in the country at their final tournament of the fall semester. Shulman captured the ITA South Region singles crown winning the championship match in decisive fashion 6-1, 6-1, becoming the 20th consecutive ITA South Region singles champion from Emory, and will now have the opportunity to compete in the ITA Cup from October 12-15 in Rome, GA.

Swimming & Diving:

After opening the season last week with the Blue-Gold meet and a dual meet loss to Georgia Tech, the Emory University swimming & diving team will return to the pool this weekend when they travel to Charlotte, NC for a dual meet against Queens University. The Eagles will travel to face-off against Queens on Saturday, October 8th at 11:00 AM for the all day dual meet. For the men, junior Nicholas Goudie has stood out so far this season winning both the 50 freestyle (20.99) and 100 freestyle (46.03) at the Georgia Tech Dual Meet. For the women, graduate student Taylor Leone continued her impressive career as an Eagle with a win in the 50 freestyle with a recorded time of 24.09.

Volleyball:

After splitting matches at the second UAA Round Robin, the Emory University volleyball team looks to continue building a strong foundation for a successful postseason with a match against regional foe Sewanee. The No. 6 ranked Eagles (9-4, 3-2) will host the Sewanee Tigers (7-9) at the Woodruff PE Center on Saturday at 5:00 PM. Emory sports a 4-0 all-time series advantage over the Tigers with the most recent match between the two in 2014 ending 3-0 with the Eagles having held the Tigers below 15 points in each set. Junior Amanda Meyer has been a menace in the middle for the Eagles, recording 10 blocks over the two matches on Sunday including a new career high six blocks in Emory's five set loss to Carnegie Mellon.
