Eagles Garner Six UAA Athlete of the Week Honors

Emory University was well represented on this week's University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week list as six Eagles earned weekly honors, the most in a single week so far this season.

Senior Annika Urban collected her third weekly award this season as she continued her dominant cross country season while sophomore Michael Burry picked up his first-ever UAA weekly honor after leading the Eagles at the Gate City Invitational last week. Swimming & Diving returned to action this weekend and swept all four awards with senior Lucas Bumgarner and junior Nicholas Goudie winning on the men's side and graduate student Taylor Leone and junior Tess Klugherz earning the honors on the women's side.

Urban had a race for the ages Friday afternoon as she won the 6k Brown Division race at the Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, PA. Urban raced to a time of 20:22 which put her in first place in the field of 383 runners as she paced the next closest runner by nearly 25 seconds. Urban's time of 20:22, on top of winning the meet, shattered the previous program record for fastest 6k time which was 20:59 established back in 2017. Urban's win marked her third consecutive individual win to open the 2022 season as she is now firmly entrenched as one of the top runners in the nation.

Burry finished atop the leaderboard amongst the Eagles contingent for the first time in his young career at the Gate City Invitational in Greensboro, NC. Burry registered a three-round score of 213 (69-72-72) which was the best three round score of his collegiate career and saw him finish in a tie for eighth place and helped the Eagles secure a third place finish in their season opening tournament.

Goudie was a two-time event winner Saturday against Georgia Tech in the first dual meet of the year and swam anchor on the Eagles' leading relay team in the 200 Medley Relay. Goudie took first in both sprint freestyle events, posting times of 20.99 in the 50 and 46.03 in the 100. In the 200 Medley Relay, Goudie helped the Eagles to a time of 1:32.09 and a second place finish.

Bumgarner led the Eagles in the diving events at the meet with the Yellow Jackets, taking second place in both events. Bumgarner posted a score of 362.40 on the 1-meter and secured 390.23 on the 3-meter.

Leone picked up where she left off in the spring and claimed the event win in the 50 Freestyle against GT. Leone posted a time of 24.09 to win the 50 and was part of two additional top relays for the Eagles in the 200 Medley (3rd, 1:47.74) and 400 Freestyle (2nd, 3:35.30).

Klugherz rounds out the weekly winners as she led the Emory women in the diving events this past Saturday. Klugherz was third in the 3-meter dive with a score of 252.38 and added a fourth place effort in the 1-meter event at 226.35.

The men's golf team is currently in action at the NCAA Division III Preview in Nicholasville, NY while the swimming & diving teams are back in the pool this Saturday, October 8th at Queens University of Charlotte. For Urban and her cross country teammates, the Eagles return to competition Friday, October 14th with the UAB Classic in Montevallo, AL.
