Emory Athletic Weekly Preview: October 17-23

The Emory Athletics Weekly Preview for October 17th – October 23rd. This preview is to serve as a weekly snapshot of all upcoming Emory athletic events for the coming week.

 

Volleyball:

After splitting conference matches this past weekend, the Emory University volleyball team is back in action this weekend as they play host to the Emory Classic Tournament. The No. 6 ranked Eagles (12-6, 4-3) will play three games over the course of two days with the first coming against St. Mary's (4-14) at 4:00 PM on Friday before taking on the Averett Cougars (14-7) at 7:00 PM the same day. Emory will cap the tournament with a match against Wooster (3-13) on Saturday at 1:00 PM. The Eagles sport a 2-0 record against the St. Mary's Belles all-time with the most recent match resulting in a straight set victory for the Eagles in 2019. Against the Cougars, the Eagles are 16-2 all-time with the last loss Emory faced at the hands of Averett coming all the way back in 1993. The Eagles match against the Wooster Fighting Scots on Saturday will mark the first ever meeting between the two. Freshman Elly Beshears has been putting on a service clinic over the last few matches including a season-best seven service aces against Brandeis on Sunday.

Men's Golf:

The Emory University men's golf team, coming off of their first tournament win of the season at the Piedmont Invitational last week, look to continue their winning streak at the DIII Golfweek Invite in Sandestin, FL early this week. The tournament is being played on the 6,651-yard, par-71 Raven Golf Club course in Sandestin, FL. The tournament field of 24 teams consist of 15 teams ranked inside the top 25 and eight within the top 10. The No. 2 ranked Eagles began play at the DIII Golfweek Invite on Sunday where they finished tied for third after one round with a score of 285. The Eagles trail first place Illinois Wesleyan by two strokes after the first 18 holes. Sophomores Michael Burry and Josh Qian sit atop the leaderboard through the first round for the Eagles, each carding a one-under par 70 to tie them for ninth overall. The Eagles will start the second round of play on Monday morning before kicking off the third and final round of play on Tuesday morning.

Women's Golf:

The Emory University women's golf team has sole possession of second place through the first round of the DIII Golfweek Invite in Sandestin, FL. The tournament is being played at the 5,601-yard, par-72 Baytowne Golf Club course in Sandestin, FL. Of the 24 teams competing at the DIII Golfweek Invite, 12 of them are ranked inside the top 25 while six of them fall within the top 10. The No. 4 ranked Eagles notched a score of 294 which sees them trail first place Oglethorpe by just a single stroke through the first 18 holes. Sophomore's Sharon Mun and Ellen Dong are tied for the Eagles lead, each carding a one-under par 71 in the first round to tie them for third place overall. The Eagles will continue play with the second round on Monday morning and the third and final round will commence on Tuesday morning.

Women's Soccer:

The Emory University women's soccer team, winners of nine straight games, look to extend its streak as they take on Piedmont this week. The Eagles (10-2, 4-0) will take on the Piedmont Lions (3-16) on Thursday evening at 6:30 PM in Demorest, GA. The Eagles sport an 8-1 record against the Lions all-time with their most recent matchup ending in a 3-0 victory for Emory in 2018. Senior Kylie Hall is having a season for the ages as she converted penalty kicks this past weekend against NYU and Brandeis which expanded her consecutive games with a point streak to nine which marks a new Emory record.

Women's Tennis:

The Emory University women's tennis team will participate in a scrimmage against SCAD Atlanta at home on Saturday. The Eagles will compete in their first non-tournament matches against SCAD on Friday, October 21st at 2:00 PM at the Woodruff PE Center in their last action of the fall semester. Senior Stephanie Shulman represented the Eagles at the ITA Cup last week as she made it to the quarterfinals in the singles draw before dropping a three set match.

Swimming & Diving:

The Emory University swimming & diving team will continue their fall season with another dual meet, this one against Birmingham-Southern starting at 1:00 PM in the Woodruff PE Center. Sophomore Liyang Sun had a standout day for Emory, winning the 100 Breast with a time of 56.43. For the women, freshman Emily Noll had the best day of her young career winning the 200 backstroke by over three seconds with her time of 2:04.10.

Men's Soccer:

The Emory University men's soccer team looks to build on its momentum generated from the 4-2 victory over Brandeis this past weekend against Roanoke later this week. The Eagles (4-6-4, 1-3) will play their final non-conference match of the season against the Roanoke Maroons (6-5-2) at the Woodruff PE Center at 2:00 PM on Sunday. The Eagles hold a 4-2 all-time series advantage over the Maroons with their last match resulting in a 1-0 victory for Emory in September of last year. Senior Alejandro Gomez was instrumental in the Eagles comeback from down two goals against the Brandeis Judges as he scored Emory's first goal and assisted on both of the Eagles last two goals.
